Year5Beck

Year 5 have visited the Jorvik Viking Centre in York today along with receiving archaeology and battle tactics workshops at Jorvik's Dig site. The children had an excellent day, asked loads of great questions and showcased just how much they have already learned about the Vikings

On Monday, Year 5 held their end of year Brass concert alongside the Firth Park Community Brass band. It was an amazing show with high levels of skill on display. The children's growing passion was evident in their performance. Thank you to all the family members who came along!

Year 5 have made amazing progress in their Brass lessons this year and are building towards what will be an amazing end of year concert. They are working so hard each week to practice the songs and we are so proud of how far they have come learning a new skill.

In Y5 this half-term, our DT project is to learn how to design and sew an Anglo-Saxon coin purse which links into our Summer term History learning. It has been a big challenge but the children have shown incredible perseverance and so many have learned a new skill this week.

At the Year 5 Science Fair, pupils also displayed their range of science work on the solar system and their newspaper reports about the planetarium visit. Parents were invited to attend and look around and it was amazing to see so many visitors looking at the children's hard work

Before the Easter break, Year 5 held our Science Fair to show off the amazing work pupils have been doing in the Spring Term. We displayed their space themed surrealist art work, their broadsheets on famous astronomers, the Cam and Follower mechanisms... (part 1)

Y5 also had a fantastic time on #WorldBookDay2024 sharing their love of reading with younger children in the school!

Y5 had a great time on #WorldBookDay2024 - we looked at the book 'The Last Wolf' and studied its environmental message which inspired us to write persuasive letters to the Prime Minister encouraging him to push for the planting of more trees.

In Science, Y5 pupils are learning about different forces. This week we have completed an investigation into gravity, air resistance and weight by making paper spinners and adding increasing weight to them to see how it affected the speed of their flight. #BeckScience

In Art this half term, Y5 are exploring the work of the surrealist Joan Miro. We started by looking at examples of his work and then trying to create our own using only collage (pens and pencils were banned!) #BeckArt

The DT project in Y5 this half-term has been to explore how Cams and Followers work. Pupils had great fun making mechanisms out of cereal boxes and milk bottle lids that use a Cam and Follower to make a planet and fact file move up and down. #BeckDT

In Computing this half term, Year 5 have been programming Crumble Boards and learning about 'If - Then' conditions in coding to control lights and motor #BeckComputing

In Science this week, Y5 pupils have been researching about the Sun and the role its plays in life on Earth. Pupils 5JW produced some amazing informative and creative fact files! #BeckScience

In Geography this week, Y5 pupils were given a laptop and the task of finding out as much as they could about the North Pole/Arctic Circle and the South Pole Antarctic Circle. Hands down the best fact discovered was that bird poo helps to keep the Arctic cool! #BeckGeography

In Maths over the last week pupils in Y5 have been looking at division. We started by trying to make strong links in our mathematical understanding of what grouping in division actually looks like by working with concrete resources #BeckMaths

This term pupils in Y5 have been learning all about space and had an amazing experience when the Planetarium appeared in our school hall recently. Pupils were taken on a breathtaking tour of the solar system and had the most incredible morning amongst the stars! #BeckScience

Pupils in Y5 have been learning about Islamic patterns in Art and have been learning different techniques for printing patterns. This week they have been printing their final designs and we all think they look awesome!

Pupils in Y5 have been learning about changes of state in Science this term and had great fun using sieving and filtering to separate different materials. #BeckScience

Pupils in Y5 have been learning about the Silk Road in history and had a go at creating their own historical trade route in the classroom. They had to draw/make/act out goods that were traded along the various locations of the ancient trade route. #BeckHistory

Today, 5SJ, half of 5LU and the Cosy Cove visited the Madina Masjid Mosque in Sheffield as part of our History, R.E. and Art topic looking at the history, beliefs and culture of Islam. Pupils were given an in-depth and fascinating tour of this incredible building!
