Last night, the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra went up in flames.
The Ukrainian government blamed Russia for the attack. Russia’s Ministry of Defense has denied culpability, claiming that the Cathedral was hit by a Ukrainian interceptor missile. The Russians provided no evidence to support this claim.
Unfortunately, this would not be the first time Russia blew up a Ukrainian Orthodox church, accidentally or otherwise. Even if Moscow is correct, however, and Kyiv’s air-defense systems damaged the Cathedral, Moscow is still, ultimately, to blame. The Russian Army fired over 70 missiles and 600 drones at the city. What choice did the Ukrainians have but to defend themselves?

@Nicholai_Korea Yeah, this is a huge misunderstanding on Rev. Jared's part, hoping he's not serious. The entire context of this is that the caller is trying to definitively say what the Church teaches and therefore teaches and has less ecclesial authority than a lay Orthodox Christian.

Maybe watch the entire interaction. The person was rebuked for putting himself in position of correcting clergy. So the clergy is saying in context that he doesnt have authority of even a layperson cause they arent Orthodox

Look I don’t like to wade into these things (or maybe I do). But if I ever say to someone, as some type of pejorative, “you’re beneath a lay person.” Please, punch me. “Lay people,” whatever that actually means, are the body of Christ.

@PageauJonathan The naivete in his statement is that he approaches Protestants as all being confessional Protestants. You know how many confessional Protestants I know? One. If anyone is misrepresenting their own religion, it's him.

I think most Evangelicals will know this and have to decide if what Gavin is protraying as Protestantism actually coincides with any reality they see around them. The Mainline Protestants believe that Orthodox and Catholics are Christian, but it leads them to wishy washy theology and sacramentality. Orthodoxy confuses modern protestants to some degree because it is both much stricter in its normative prescriptions while being more open to the absolute mercy of a loving God who desires the salvation of all men. This is the bridge of understanding we need to cross.

@PageauJonathan As an Evangelical, Gavin’s description of Protestant salvation isn’t reality. I was taught that Catholics weren’t truly Christian because they didn’t believe the “true gospel.” That’s not uncommon in Evangelicalism, regardless of what Luther thought.
