POLICE SERVICE COMMISSION PRESS RELEASE RECRUITMENT OF 50,000 POLICE CONSTABLES: OVER 400,000 APPLICATIONS RECEIVED; APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED BY TWO WEEKS The Police Service Commission (PSC) and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) announce a two-week extension for the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 Constables. The application portal which opened on 15th December, 2025 has now been extended to close on 8th February, 2026. This decision follows the receipt of over 400,000 applications and a review showing significant disparities in state participation. While some states like Adamawa, Benue, and Kaduna have high application numbers, states such as Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Anambra have notably lower submissions. The extension aims to ensure equitable representation nationwide. All eligible Nigerians, particularly from above-mentioned states with fewer applications, are strongly encouraged to apply via the official portal: npfapplication.psc.gov.ng. State Governments, Local Government Councils, sociocultural organizations, religious bodies, community leaders, and other stakeholders are strongly encouraged to mobilize and sensitize eligible citizens within their jurisdictions to apply before the new deadline. The PSC and NPF reaffirm their commitment to a fair and transparent recruitment process. Torty Njoku Kalu Head, Protocol and Public Affairs Police Service Commission, Abuja 26 January 2026

NIGERIA POLICE FORCE REJECTS UNFOUNDED ALLEGATIONS; REAFFIRMS PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS AND DUE PROCESS The Nigeria Police Force has taken note of the statement issued by the International Press Institute (IPI) announcing the suspension of its engagement with the Force over an alleged wrongful arrest involving a journalist. The Nigeria Police Force states unequivocally that the attempt to link the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, to the alleged incident is unfounded, misleading, and unsupported by facts. At no time did the IGP authorize, direct, or condone the arrest, harassment, or intimidation of any journalist. Upon being formally notified of the incident by the President of IPI, Mr. Musikilu Mojeed, through the Force Public Relations Officer, the IGP immediately ordered the release of the journalist and directed the Force Monitoring Unit to commence investigation into the conduct of the officers involved. Clear instructions were issued that any officer found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with extant laws and disciplinary procedures. These actions were taken promptly and transparently, and the IPI was duly informed. It is therefore incorrect and disingenuous to suggest institutional hostility to press freedom or to portray the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force as indifferent to media rights. The IGP has consistently made it clear that misconduct by individual officers cannot and must not be attributed to the leadership of the Force or weaponized to malign the institution. The Nigeria Police Force is a large organization with over 300,000 personnel deployed nationwide. While the vast majority of officers perform their duties professionally and lawfully, isolated cases of misconduct may occur. Such cases are not shielded, excused, or ignored. They are investigated and addressed strictly in line with due process. To generalize the actions of a few individuals as official policy or leadership failure is factually inaccurate and institutionally unfair. In furtherance of due process, the petition submitted by the IPI was referred to the Force Monitoring Unit for investigation. However, records show that the IPI declined repeated invitations to appear before the Unit to formally adopt and harmonize its statements, an essential procedural requirement for concluding investigations and enforcing disciplinary measures. It is contradictory to obstruct investigative processes and, at the same time, allege inaction. Against this backdrop, the decision by the IPI to suspend engagement with the Nigeria Police Force over a single incident, despite immediate corrective action and ongoing investigation, raises serious questions about the objectivity and proportionality of its response. The Nigeria Police Force will not accept narratives that seek to undermine its leadership or institutional credibility through unsubstantiated allegations. The Force remains resolute in enforcing discipline within its ranks and upholding the rule of law, but it will also firmly resist attempts to unfairly impugn the integrity of its leadership. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to constitutional policing, media freedom, and professional accountability. While engagement with stakeholders is desirable, no organization has the authority to substitute public sentiment for due process or to pronounce guilt where investigations are ongoing. CSP BENJAMIN HUNDEYIN, anipr, mipra Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja.   24th December, 2025.

CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR: IGP DIRECTS MASSIVE DEPLOYMENT NATIONWIDE FOR SAFE, PEACEFUL YULETIDE CELEBRATIONS The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has ordered the strategic deployment of police personnel and operational assets across the country to ensure a safe, peaceful, and crime-free Christmas and New Year celebration. In line with the Force’s proactive security strategy for the festive season, the IGP has directed all Zonal AIGs and State Command CPs to intensify patrols, visibility policing, intelligence-led operations, and confidence-building engagements throughout the period. Specialized units, including the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Command, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, Special Intervention Squad, Highway Patrol, Marine Police, and the Airwing, have been placed on heightened operational readiness. The deployment also focuses on places of worship, recreational centres, markets, parks, event venues, transport terminals, highways, critical national infrastructure, and other high-density public spaces. Additional patrol teams and surveillance units have also been activated to cover inter-state routes and major expressways to prevent road-related crimes, traffic disorder, and accidents. The deployed officers have been charged to be firm but courteous in the discharge of their duties. The IGP further ordered all Commands to sustain raids on identified blackspots, forests, criminal hideouts, and flashpoints, as well as strengthen collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders to ensure holistic security coverage. While wishing all Nigerians a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year ahead, the Inspector-General of Police urges citizens to remain vigilant, celebrate responsibly, and report all suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through available emergency lines. The Nigeria Police Force assures of steadfast devotion to ensuring that all Nigerians enjoy the Yuletide season and beyond in an atmosphere of peace, safety, and security. STATEMENT BY THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE ON THE MOTOR VEHICLE TINTED GLASS PERMIT POLICY 1. The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to recent public discussions concerning the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy with particular reference to the statement issued by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association. While robust civic engagement remains a defining feature of a democratic society, it has become necessary at this time to provide institutional clarity in a manner that reassures the public, affirms respect for the rule of law, and preserves public order. 2. The Nigeria Police Force is established under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and is statutorily charged with the responsibility of maintaining public safety, preventing crime, and preserving internal security. In the discharge of this mandate, the Force operates strictly within the confines of the law and under the supervision of civil authority. 3. The Inspector-General of Police has reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force remains unwavering in its respect for the judiciary. The Force will comply fully with all valid orders of courts of competent jurisdiction and will not act in any manner that undermines ongoing judicial proceedings. 4. At the same time, it is important to clarify that the existence of pending litigation does not, in itself, extinguish the lawful responsibilities of the Police, except where a court has expressly and finally directed otherwise. 5. As of today, there is no final judicial pronouncement declaring the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy unlawful, nor is there any subsisting order permanently restraining the Nigeria Police Force from performing its statutory duties in relation to the regulation of tinted vehicle glasses. 6. Accordingly, the policy remains part of the existing regulatory framework for road safety, crime prevention, and national security, subject at all times to the authority and supervisory role of the courts. 7. Representations made before the court by counsel to the Nigeria Police Force were made in good faith and accurately reflected the institutional position of the Force. Pending the determination of the court, the Police has exercised restraint in deference to the primacy of the judicial process. 8. Such restraint should not, however, be misconstrued as a waiver or abandonment of lawful authority, particularly in matters that directly implicate public safety and the protection of lives and property. 9. The administrative communication issued on 15th December 2025 was intended solely to guide internal planning and enhance public understanding. It did not direct immediate enforcement actions, nor did it authorise conduct inconsistent with any subsisting court process. 10. Operational decisions relating to the timing and mode of enforcement remain within the lawful discretion of the Nigeria Police Force, exercised in accordance with the Constitution and subject to judicial oversight. 11. The regulation of tinted vehicle glasses remains a legitimate security concern. Both globally and within Nigeria, the misuse of heavily tinted vehicles has been associated with serious crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and other threats to public safety. The Nigeria Police Force therefore has a duty to address such risks in a manner that is lawful, proportionate, and respectful of citizens’ rights. 12. Where enforcement is lawfully undertaken, it will be guided by professionalism, moderation, and strict adherence to human rights standards. 13. The Inspector-General of Police reaffirms the commitment of the Force leadership to maintaining a zero-tolerance stance towards extortion, harassment, or abuse of authority by its personnel. Any officer found to have engaged in such conduct will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with established procedures.
