AIRPORT POLICE COMMAND INTERCEPTS 14-YEAR-OLD IN STOWAWAY ATTEMPT AT MURTALA MUHAMMED INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT The Airport Police Command has intercepted a 14-year-old male, identified as Eke Miracle, in connection with a stowaway attempt at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos on Monday 30th March, 2026. The minor was discovered on the airport tarmac while attempting to unlawfully gain access beneath an aircraft, an act which constitutes a serious breach of aviation security protocols within a highly sensitive operational environment. Preliminary findings indicate that the juvenile unlawfully entered a restricted area of the airport without authorization, contrary to Sections 2 and 3 of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) byelaws, and engaged in actions consistent with a stowaway attempt. Upon interception, the minor was taken into protective custody in line with due process and established child protection procedures. His parents were promptly notified, and all necessary protocols were observed, including the conduct of the interview process in the presence of his parents. The Command also ensured that the minor was provided with appropriate care, support, and welfare considerations throughout the process. The Commissioner of Police, Airport Police Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, Mnips, PhD, reiterated the Command’s unshaken resolve to safeguarding the nation’s aviation infrastructure, describing the airport as a critical national asset that requires strict adherence to security regulations at all times. While emphasizing that due process will be strictly followed, CP Ogunbode urged parents and guardians to exercise greater vigilance over their children and wards, particularly in relation to movements around restricted and high-risk environments such as airports. The Command further notes that the case will be handled in accordance with applicable juvenile justice procedures, and the minor will be charged before the appropriate juvenile court. AIRPORT POLICE COMMAND SET TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL POLICE DAY 2026 …reaffirms commitment to community partnership The Airport Police Command is set to join the rest of the Nigeria Police Force in commemorating National Police Day 2026, themed “Community Partnership: Building Trust.” In line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, the Command is poised to leverage the celebration as an opportunity to strengthen engagement with the public and further reinforce trust within the aviation community and beyond. A series of activities have been outlined to mark the occasion, beginning with a sanitation and environmental cleaning exercise on Monday, 30th March 2026. This will be followed by a walkathon on Tuesday, 31st March 2026. On Wednesday, 1st April 2026, the Command will embark on public sensitization campaigns, including targeted engagement with drivers and other key stakeholders within the airport environment. As part of efforts to honour the sacrifices of fallen heroes, cheques will be presented to families of deceased officers on Thursday, 2nd April 2026. The celebration will culminate in a grand finale on Tuesday, 7th April 2026, featuring a ceremonial parade, tactical displays, and other activities at the Eagle Square, Abuja. Ag. IGP OLATUNJI DISU ASSUMES DUTY AS THE 23RD INDIGENOUS INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE Ag. IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu psc has assumed duty as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police. He takes over from IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun (Rtd) PhD, NPM who served meritoriously as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police from 19th June 2023 to 24th February 2026. The Acting Inspector-General of Police, born on 13th April, 1966, hails from Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State. His educational qualifications include: MSC Entrepreneurship, NOUN (2023); MSC Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology, LASU (2022); Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation and Criminal Intelligence, UNILAG (2019), MSC, Public Administration, Adekunle Ajasin University (2010), PGD International Relations and Strategic Studies, LASU (2000) and B.A English (Education), LASU (1990). He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on 18th May, 1992, and brings to the office a wealth of operational, investigative, intelligence, and administrative experience garnered over decades of distinguished service in various strategic capacities across the country. FOLLOW-UP ON FIRE INCIDENT AT MURTALA MUHAMMED INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (MMIA) OLD TERMINAL 1 ...fire successfully extinguished, normalcy restored The Airport Police Command, Ikeja, Lagos, is pleased to update the public on the successful containment of the fire outbreak at the Old Terminal 1 building of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) on Monday, 23 February 2026. The fire, which started in a section of the old terminal building, was fully brought under control and extinguished through the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies. By late hours on the same day, the situation had been stabilized. Twelve workers who were trapped in the affected areas, including sections near the control tower, were safely evacuated. All evacuees received prompt medical attention, and no casualties or fatalities were recorded. Flight operations, which were temporarily disrupted have fully resumed. All activities have now been relocated to the New Terminal, while the Old Terminal 1 building remains closed to all operations and access pending further assessment and clearance. The Airport Police Command commends the professionalism, bravery, and swift collaboration of FAAN Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, medical teams, and all personnel involved, in ensuring that lives were protected and the incident contained without loss of life. The public, passengers, and airport users are advised to continue relying on official channels for accurate information, check directly with airlines for flight updates, and avoid the closed Old Terminal area. AIRPORT POLICE COMMAND RESPONDS TO FIRE INCIDENT AT MURTALA MUHAMMED INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (MMIA) Old Terminal 1 ...rescue efforts ongoing The Airport Police Command, Ikeja, Lagos, wishes to update the public on our coordinated response to the fire outbreak at the Old Terminal 1 building of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. At approximately 15:45 hours, a distress call was received via radio from the Aviation Security (AVSEC) base station, confirming a fire incident at the Old Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing major renovation and repair works. The fire reportedly extended towards the control tower area. In line with established emergency protocols and inter-agency collaboration, the Airport Police Command immediately activated its response mechanisms. A police helicopter was promptly deployed to the scene to provide aerial support and facilitate the safe evacuation of any workers or personnel who may have been trapped or at risk within the affected building. Our officers, working closely with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Rescue and Fire Fighting Services , Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other emergency responders, are ensuring perimeter security, crowd control, and the protection of life and property throughout the operation. As of this release, no casualties have been reported. Evacuation efforts remain ongoing where necessary, and the situation is being closely monitored to prevent any secondary incidents or security breaches. Members of the public are advised to rely only on official channels for accurate information and to avoid the affected area to allow emergency teams unhindered access.
