@nicholeaileen It’s different when you’re married. It took us several years, but my wife and I started sharing each other’s location b/c we got tired of texting each other “where are you?”

@edinacivic I remember when they reluctantly installed this “sidewalk” from One Southdale only after the city’s insistence. This is a deeply unpleasant experience to use, and likely not even ADA minimum.

I like this thoughtful stepping stone pathway cutting across the grass at One Southdale Place. But then you have to walk the length of a football field across the parking lot to reach the entrance of Kowalski's Market.

@aaron_renn I feel this map underrepresents the level of wood being used in northern New England.

@sdho I’d agree in principle, but in this particular case it looks like there are wetlands on the “direct path” between the westbound off-ramp and 60th.

This is what I see more — rather than following the shortest path, the sidewalk bows to follow the curb line. For a cyclist on this, it involves a sharp, 90° turn, and makes it hard to see of vehicles in the roundabout are actually stopping.

Into this sidewalk design at Marystown Road off the US 169 Shakopee Bypass. Most roundabout designers tend to put sidewalks following curb lines, even when there's plenty of available space. This makes peds walk farther and hurts clear sight lines. This is better IMO:

@sdho @MnDOT Unless the contract is that warped, I feel you at least have a case with the ped lighting. Contractor screwed that one up.

@ajfroggie @MnDOT We paid extra - and agreed to maintain - to get ped lights on the bridges, but the contractor determined high shoebox fixtures provide substantially the same function, so they swapped those in. So we paid local dollars to get non-decorative decorative bridge lighting.

If you drive around Richfield and Bloomington, you've probably noticed the closure of 494 this weekend! This was demolition of the 12th Ave bridge. It's being replaced alongside Nicollet this summer. Both structures will have about 3x width increase in sidewalk size.

@aaron_renn @wil_da_beast630 The popularity of the Borealis suggests that despite the disconnect between Midwest metros you imply, there’s still demand for rail between them.

@wil_da_beast630 Not really. The cities of the Midwest don’t really interact all that much whereas the cities on the NEC do.

Random reminder that the Great Lakes Metroplex is far bigger than the Bos-NY-Wash. It takes a few of our cites to match NYC/Manhattan and her suburbs, but people from Chicago or Toronto are always a bit bemused when residents of Boston and similar chilly villages start critiquing "flyover land."
Steve (Michigan) 🇺🇲@steve78333

The Great Lakes mega-region of 60 million people has a population density similar to France. This is a ideal region to build a robust rail network, with hourly trains between cities.

These layouts are what I have on file from 2021, so some details may have shifted. A frustrating issue is that, despite the plans for the protected bikeway north of 77th, @MnDOT refused to allow it to connect into their project. So... shoulder-style bike lanes for this crossing.

@pdouglasweather Worth mentioning that before the end of that Halloween storm, MSP had its earliest ever below zero temperature reading.

@sdho @DaveEatsLunch Had they done it 20-30 years ago when it was considered, the connection would have passed thru what was rhen and is still largely an industrial area.

@DaveEatsLunch It should probably not be the city’s responsibility, although I think realistically county or state would probably want a better northern terminus, and that could be bad for neighborhood (like direct 94 connection)

Kind of unsightly that St. Paul left this remnant crumbled asphalt on the ramps from Ayd Mill Road to Grand and St. Clair Aves. Everything costs money, but tearing up old asphalt and putting down dirt and seed is pretty cheap!

@sdho 100% with you on headlights. But I don’t really see the point of stop-start. The amount of gas/emissions saved in my Crosstrek is miniscule even in an urban environment, and virtually zero where I live.

@sdho @Hennepin Could some of that just be Bloomington versus Richfield? I’ve long been of the impression that Richfield residents care much more about bicycling.

The difference between Nicollet in Richfield and Nicollet in Bloomington shows that, despite some improvements, @Hennepin will steadfastly fight for motorists — while any accommodations at all for people walking and biking is a matter of local preference only.

Hennepin County declares they are moving forward with the new Nicollet in Bloomington which will: 1. Remove the existing on-street bike lanes 2. Provide no dedicated bicycle facility 3. Widen east side sidewalk to sidepath 4. Provide limited tree planting, no pedestrian refuge

@pdouglasweather How does last year compare to other low-snowfall years? I know it’s not 1st or 2nd…I distinctly remember the winter of 86-87 (70s in March!) and I recall reading one winter in the ‘30s that was even lower.

@sdho Spacing. A single on-ramp to WB crosstown instead of 2 with more length for the auxiliary lane from the 121 on-ramp to the Penn off-ramp.

@ajfroggie Any idea why they got rid of the SB 121 to WB Crosstown ramp? Low enough volume the southbound yield set-up works fine, but kinda curious why they took old the connection that didn't require it.

Cool view of the Crosstown Commons in the late 1960s. This is the western junction at Grasslake, facing southwest.
