I only today realised that Andrew Tate's username refers to a cobra. I always wondered why he went by "cobrotate" like some vegetable on a barbecue.

@tunguz One of the best developers I worked with always advocated for the simplest way of storing data. CSV files is what he would start with unless proven that you needed more. I learned a lot from that guy.

@LBC re Ofsted: If you want to know a school's academic results you can look at league tables. If you want to know what a school is like on a day to day basis you can go on mumsnet (for example). Ofsted adds zero value.

@IanDunt Similarly the other way round: re-watching old films with actors who you used to think were really old and now thinking "they look young"

One of the worst parts of getting old: seeing photos of actors who are much younger than you and thinking: Christ they look old. And then slowly realising the horrible implication.

Bing Chat has succeeded where Bard, Galactica and Tay have stumbled (or worse). Microsoft and OpenAI have done an outstanding job of getting adoption for their new tech. Some lessons in there for all of us working in the world of tech. alanbuxton.wordpress.com/2023/02/17/wha…

The Agile Manifesto is nearly 22. Worth reflecting on its values: Individuals > Processes Working software > Docs Customer collaboration > Contract negotiation Responding to change > Following a plan How well are you applying them in your software dev? alanbuxton.wordpress.com/2023/02/10/agi…

Believing that LLMs bring us meaningfully closer to creating human-like artificial intelligence is like believing that animating realistic CG characters via motion capture brings us closer to creating artificial lifeforms.

@CyberneticMelon I've heard similar reports about students not knowing how to file docs. TBH I think the filing system metaphor is dreadful (gmail uses tags rather than folders). In due course we will look back on the filing system the same way we think of faxes now
