the Yale Pelican series is strong across the board, many/most of them classics. The 20th century is too big a field for a few books but some important critics: Rosenberg Schapiro Steinberg Greenberg Fried Clark Krauss Foster Buchloh Bernstein

If you have zero background then starting with something like Gombrich probably makes sense but definitely don’t stop there

the score is Gustav Holst’s THE PLANETS, and it does work exceptionally well, we talked about that and much else when I interviewed the directors: toneglow.substack.com/p/film-show-06…

Have had the privilege to see a few @NDNF titles and my fave so far is Chronovisor. Beautiful orchestral score, quite rare for this kind of experimental film. What phone calls do I need to make for the Philharmonic to perform it live to picture?

I think there’s no such thing as beauty in the abstract, and every instance of beauty like a painting or composition has much to say about the social world it emerges from and our present relationship to that world

I also figured out how to stop the war in Iran but that one’s gonna have to wait for placement in a print edition

I was thinking about it all night and I figured out a perfect solution to the crisis of culture writing and criticism, but out of leftist principle I’m not going to share it until a magazine commissions me at an hourly rate

It's very funny when people yell at @BurialMagazine cause he's a sweetheart and my life has only gotten better having him as a friend (he is not pointing a gun at me to say this)

I think its just a hard place to be in now. No one wants to be exploited, but so much just wont get done without sacrifice. It’s terrible to ask for but that is the system we are under. Do we just stop creating because of that? Seems unfair :(

There is a conversation budding here around artistic exceptionalism, and how it is deeply embedded in a lot of art culture (especially when discussing artisans or petit bourgeoise artists and labor) and on the flip side how art has been undervalued on a societal scale. Hard Qs
Alex F 🇵🇸@alexcfields

On principle sure but the lack of $ to pay writers is a structural crisis in this field and (usually) not simply a choice by greedy editors Writers need publications for audience, for invaluable editing, and in my field as a means of access to press credentials, screeners, etc

@NairYasmin Yeah it’s all very bad. The world of art and criticism isn’t doing much better than the worlds of organizing and geopolitics. We live in hell. We do what we can regardless

@alexcfields No, I'm just saying: people will literally die in the hellscape you describe. Exhausted and depleted artists and writers, bad art devoid of any real spark. Look at Substack, look at the podcast or art worlds. Doesn't get more materialist than that. People are already dying.

@NairYasmin I don’t per se disagree with most of what you’re saying I just think, to be a cheeky Marxist about it, you’re acknowledging only one aspect of the contradiction and not its totality

@NairYasmin Yes, there is more crap than good writing. Yes, conditions get worse and worse. But at the same time much of what is good only exists because of ppl struggling uphill against impossible conditions. 🤷🏻‍♀️
