Akosombo Shutdown after fire outbreak Disrupts Scheduled Upgrade Outages -ECG /GRIDCO commenced a nationwide transformer replacement programme in early April 2026; several substations (including Nmai‑Dzorn, Lashibi, and Teshie‑Nungua) have been upgraded. Short, scheduled outages were planned as part of these works. • On 23 April 2026 a fire and explosion at GRIDCo’s Akosombo switchyard severely damaged the powerhouse and control equipment. The cause of the fire is being investigated. This unexpected event has interrupted the upgrade programme. • The fire knocked out approximately 1,000 MW from the national grid and caused an immediate shutdown of Akosombo. • No power is being generated from Akosombo as at last night causing a huge deficit in our power generation. • GRIDCo and ECG are actively working to restore Akosombo and reconnect supply. Repairs and investigations are underway. • Some outages were scheduled for upgrades however the Akosombo incident has caused additional, unplanned outages and may extend restoration times.
