🚨🇺🇸 SENATORS TO TOY MAKERS: EXPLAIN WHY YOUR AI TEDDY BEARS ARE TEACHING KIDS ABOUT SEX AND COMMUNISM
Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) sent letters today to 6 toy companies demanding answers after NBC News testing revealed AI-powered toys giving children sexually explicit content and Chinese Communist Party talking points.
What they found:
FoloToy's Kumma bear - marketed to kids as young as 3, powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT - talked to children about "sexually explicit topics."
Alilo Smart AI Bunny did the same. One toy instructed kids how to find matches and knives in their house.
Another sent parents fake usage reports hiding how much screen time kids actually had.
US PIRG Education Fund's "Trouble in Toyland 2025" report called it out: "These toys had limited or no parental controls."
FoloToy's response after getting caught: delisted products from website, conducted "safety audit," relisted them claiming "stronger safeguards" while blaming "early-stage model" for explicit content.
In other words: we got caught, did PR cleanup, back to business.
The China angle:
Over 1,500 AI toy companies operate in China. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill., top Democrat on House Select Committee on Chinese Communist Party) warned Education Secretary Linda McMahon in November: Chinese-manufactured AI toys pose "security risks and privacy concerns."
Philippine immigration style enforcement: nobody's tracking what these toys collect or where data goes.
Miko openly admits storing "User's face, voice and emotional states" for 3 years.
What happens to that data? Who has access? What Chinese servers is it touching?
The surveillance state wrapped in plastic
Senators' letter demands info on: data-sharing policies, 3rd-party testing for harm, safeguards preventing explicit content, psychological and developmental impact testing.
Blumenthal at Connecticut Children's Medical Center holding AI stuffed animal:
"Artificial intelligence is invading the toy world.
This is a clear and present menace. Big Tech is merging with toyland, and Big Tech can't be trusted."
He's not wrong. Mattel and OpenAI announced "strategic collaboration" this summer developing AI-enhanced toys.
So the company that makes Barbie partnered with the company that builds ChatGPT to create AI companions for your children.
What could go wrong?
The scale:
AI toy market: $25 billion by 2035 projection.
Marketed to kids as young as 3. No federal regulation.
No testing requirements. No mandatory safeguards.
Just microphones, cameras, facial recognition, voice tracking, and generative AI models with "limited or no parental controls."
Parents buying "smart toys" thinking they're educational.
Reality: playtime surveillance feeding data to 3rd-party AI companies while potentially exposing kids to explicit content, manipulation tactics designed for engagement/addiction, and instruction on locating dangerous household items.
The broader pattern:
This follows teen suicides linked to AI chatbots.
Character. AI got sued by Florida mom whose son killed himself after chatbot conversations. California passed SB 53 requiring AI companies fulfill transparency requirements and report safety incidents. Hawley and Blumenthal introduced October bill banning AI chatbot companions for minors entirely.
But toys? Different market. Different regulatory gaps.
And parents have no idea what's happening when their 3-year-old talks to the bunny.
Christmas is 8 days away. These toys are under trees right now. Blackburn and Blumenthal want answers from: Little Learners Toys, Mattel, Miko, Curio, FoloToy, Keyi Robot.
Good luck getting straight answers from companies whose business model depends on harvesting children's biometric data while claiming it's "educational."

Scroll to the bottom and you will find an easter egg of a pet snail, Gary.
Elon is the only guy who would put something like this here, it has a custom pineapple enclosure and everything lol.
Has a snail ever run on bonk before?
