The Pentagon summoned the Pope's ambassador, told him the United States has the military power to do "whatever it wants," and warned that the Church better take its side. They even invoked the Avignon Papacy, a dark chapter in history when a government used military force to bend the Church to its will. So where exactly does this end? If the Pope refuses to fall in line, what's the next move, bomb the Vatican? thedailybeast.com/trump-official…

UPDATE: Letters from Leo can now independently confirm that the meeting took place — and that the Vatican was so alarmed by the Pentagon’s tactics that Pope Leo XIV shelved plans to visit the United States later this year. Many in the Vatican saw the Pentagon’s reference to an Avignon papacy as a threat to use military force against the Holy See.

NEW: A stunning new report claims that the Pentagon summoned Pope Leo XIV’s top American diplomat and threatened him after the U.S.-born pontiff gave his January state-of-the-world address. Leo used the address to denounce a world ruled by “a diplomacy based on force” and “zeal for war.” thelettersfromleo.com/p/the-pentagon…

The Philippines built a $30B call center empire on one thing: English-speaking graduates who could think on their feet. 9 in 10 Filipino children now can’t read a simple text by age 10. The pipeline didn’t break overnight. It’s been draining for two decades.

How does a country go from one of Asia’s highest literacy rates post-WW2 to this? Mass promotion culture. Teachers pushed to pass students regardless of readiness. Schools rewarded for low dropout numbers, not actual learning. A generation of graduates who technically finished school. And can’t read.

Jackie Chan said this scene terrified him more than almost anything else in his career. He spent days standing on a rooftop, staring down 20 stories, trying to convince himself to jump. Sliding face-first down a 45-degree glass wall with hidden cable.

Maturing is realizing that La La Land is actually a happy ending. It is not about two people staying together forever, it is about two people meeting at the right time, changing each other's lives, and leaving with more than they came with. Mia became the woman she dreamed of because Seb believed in her, and Seb built the club he always wanted because Mia reminded him not to give up. Their love was not wasted. It was a bridge, carrying each of them to the lives they were destined for, proof that not every love is forever but every love can mean something. And sometimes the most honest ending is not holding on, but walking forward with gratitude for what was given.

In 2022, Deng Youcai's wife was left paralyzed by a brain tumor. She asked him to let her die, but he refused. He became her full-time caregiver, spent over ¥2m (~$280,000), and danced everyday in front of her to cheer her up until she finally recovered. Unconditional love❤️

🚨 JIANG: “I’ve been in China for 25 years and I can tell you that there is almost no interest for a democracy in China. For a democracy to exist in China you would need to have people who respected human rights, individual liberty, who had empathy, and who believed in the rule of law. The reality is that in China the system is set up so that the ultimate objective is to become a bureaucrat. That’s what all Chinese people aspire to. The higher you climb the bureaucracy the better. Traditionally China has been an empire and in order to survive in an empire you become a civil servant. That’s why Chinese work so hard in school. So they can pass the civil servant examination to become a bureaucrat so they can provide guarantees and protection to their family.”

I think we should all applaud Donald Trump this morning. He accepted the Big L far earlier than I thought he would. This takes a big man. Most wouldn't have done it. Given he has accepted Iranian terms as a basis for negotiations, it seems possible that no agreement will be reached when the US media and political class get stuck into the implications of this. But 10 out of 10 to Trump for doing this before a land invasion and much greater economic pain (yet minus a million for getting into this trap to begin with.)
