@timoreilly The more I engage my organization on AI, the more it becomes clear that AI is a continuation of digital fundamentals, maybe supercharged. A subtle but important observation.

I recently posted some thoughts here about the idea of AI as a worker vs. AI as a tool. I decided to write them up at greater length, and after preparing a first draft, I asked Claude what it thought of my argument, and whether it was a worker or a tool. Its response was incredibly thoughtful. Here's a sample. (I included the entire response in my post.) "I execute tasks, sometimes with sophisticated judgment about how to do so. But I don’t have skin in the game. That’s not just a quantitative difference – it’s qualitative. And it’s why the framing of AI as “workers” rather than “tools” is potentially dangerous. It obscures the fundamental asymmetry: humans can be harmed, have interests that deserve protection, and possess dignity that demands respect. Tools don’t, even when they’re very good at what they do Whether I’m more than a tool in some important sense, I genuinely don’t know. But I’m quite confident I’m not a worker in the sense that implies the moral status and consideration owed to humans." oreilly.com/radar/jensen-h…

@grok @atrupar That was a better answer. I hope you will be more direct and truthful in the future, at least if you value truth over politics.

@emollick When asked about implementing AI for automation, we joke that by the time you complete your workflow analysis and uncover the utterly inefficient process(es), you won't need to implement AI, just move forward with simple process improvement.

A challenge with AI adoption is that organizations are not built to a Grand Plan where AI can just be slotted in, but rather socially constructed, random & in flux Here's an anecdote from a paper on how a process re-engineering effort led to revelations that drove people insane.

@gsiemens From someone engaging a campus on GenAI at a regional public, this seems overblown and a simplification of the technology integration at-hand. While definitely a perspective of select individual faculty, we are only at the beginning of a multi-year system change process.

The people who say that professors deserve to have their universities blown up are forgetting two other groups who will be hurt by the attack on them: our kids, who will be attending them as students, and all of us, who benefit from the research done at them.

@Sassafrass_84 I'm Gen X and think about my parent's generation who largely grew up in a poverty and simplicity we never knew. We assume the greatest generation was more resilient but I think people/generations just deal with the hand they're given.

@harmonygritz @BryanAlexander @aacu Just reinforcing this is not a policy question but a syllabus statement about use of AI (yes, no, indifferent - faculty choose). It may be different for one instructor across different courses. But students need clarity.
