A young man was shepherding horses in the mountains. A horse ran away. He went after it. Suddenly, he heard the horse shout out loud and painful. Following the noises, he entered into a dark valley and saw several monsters pinning down the horse and eating it alive and raw. They looked half-human, half-animal, with skin as coarse as pine tree barks and hair fluffy like ruffled feathers. They had purely white, bulging eyes that looked like two peeled chicken eggs. Shepherds were mostly equipped with rifles. This young man was bold and mischievous. He climbed up a tree and fired at the monsters. They escaped into the depth of the woods. Half the horse was already eaten. Nobody saw them again. As a result, nobody knows what they actually are.

A farmer's son was bewitched by a fox spirit. His family hired a sorcerer to exorcise it. The fox spirit was caught and to be thrown into a boiling oil pot. The boy kowtowed to the sorcerer to plead for her life. The fox spirit was released. But the boy missed her so much that he fell seriously sick, and no doctor or medicine was effective. One day, the fox spirit revisited him. He was both happy and sad, but the fox spirit acted quite aloof and said to him: 'You long for me only for my good looks, but you don't know it's just a illusion. When you see my true form, you'd be scared and disgusted.' Then she fell onto the ground and turned into a grey-furred, long-tailed fox. It snuffled and looked at him with torch-like eyes. Then it jumped onto the roof, howled a few times, and left. After that, the boy recovered and never thought of her again.

One early morning, an official on his way to work saw a few people holding torches under a willow tree, as if something unusual had happened. Out of curiosity, he advanced to have a look and found they were saving a royal guard who hanged himself. After a long while, the guard revived and told them he had no wish to die. When passing by the tree, he saw a brightly lit small house with a round window, and a young woman waved at him from inside. But the moment he put his head in, the round window turned into a noose and hanged him up. So it was actually a self-hanged ghost looking for a substitute. It's said that people died of suicide can't reincarnate without finding a substitute first.

A Mr. Ge bought a second-hand light green robe from the market. One day, he went out after locking up the door. When back, he couldn't find the keys. Thinking it might be on the bed, he looked through the window, only to see the robe stood up like a person. He shouted out in terror, and the robe collapsed on the ground. His roommate analyzed: 'It must be a dead person's garment. His old spirit is still attached to it. Ghosts are dark forces that can be driven away by sunshine. Let's put it under the sun for a few days.' After the sunshine treatment, the robe caused no mischiefs again.

Mr. Xu once lived in a buddhist monastery and shared a room with a friend. At midnight, two torches lit up from the northern wall. When looking close, they saw a human face as big as a dustpan pushed out from the wall. The two torches were rays of its eyes. The friend shook in fear, but Mr. Xu got up casually from bed after putting on a jacket and spoke up: 'I just wanted to read, but couldn't find any candles. What a pleasure to have you here!' He took out a book and sat back to the face, reading aloud. After a few pages, the torches dimmed. Mr. Xu knocked at the wall to call it out, but it didn't respond. Another night, when Mr. Xu was sitting on a toilet and a child servant was holding a candle for him, the face surged up from the ground and smirked at them. The child servant dropped his candle out of fear. Mr. Xu picked it up, set it on top of the monster's head, and said: 'We are just looking for a candle holder, and you came to our service again.' The face stared at him without moving. Mr Xu remarked: 'There's so many places. Why do you come here? It's said that there's a species that loves bad odor. You must be one of them. I can't let you come for nothing.' He wickedly wiped the monster's mouth with used toilet paper. The monster threw up, shrieked, overturned the candle and disappeared. From then on, it was never seen again.

My grandfather's study was in a leafy,moss-covered courtyard. Its door was forever locked and open only to himself. Servants were forbidden to enter. One day, my grandfather went out, and my uncle, then in his early teens, sneaked into the courtyard to escape the summer heat. He heard noises inside the study, wondering if my grandfather had returned. When peeping through a window to ascertain it, he saw an extremely pretty woman reclining in a bamboo chair. Opposite the chair, there stood a five-feet tall mirror, and the woman's image in the mirror was a fox! Scared, my uncle dared not move and kept observing. Soon, the woman also caught her image in the mirror. No less startled, she hurried to the mirror and blew white breaths upon it until it was blurred by vapor. Then she went back to the chair. When the moisture varnished, the mirror showed her human image. --Translated from Fantastic Tales by Ji Xiaolan

Alex_感知@Alex_perception

A Mr. Sun was once lying sick in a boat. Before he knew it, he was on the bank, feeling quite light. When looking ahead, he saw a person leading the way. Dizzy and confused, he followed him without questioning. They arrived at a house, which looked rich and clean. Inside a room, he saw a young woman giving birth. Just when he was about to back out, someone slapped him on the back, and he fainted. When he woke up, he found himself had become a small baby bundled up. He knew it was reincarnation, but he could do nothing about it. When he wanted to speak, a chilly force would pierce in through his forehead and freeze his tongue. He looked at the furniture of the rooms, and the calligraphic works and paintings on the walls, and remembered them by heart. On the third day, a maid servant dropped him by accident when giving him a bath. When he opened eyes again, he was back in the boat. His family told him: 'You have stopped breathing for three days. As your limbs are still soft and your body is still warm, we dare not put you into the coffin.' Mr. Sun immediately asked for paper and pen, wrote down his experience, and sent a person to that house, asking the owner not to blame the maid servant. He recovered the very day and paid the family a visit. All the maid servants looked familiar. The landlord was old and childless. All marveled over the unexplainable incident. --Translated from Fantastic Tales by Ji Xiaolan

There was a mansion in Yama's street. In its courtyard grew a jujube tree that was said to have been over a hundred years old. On bright moonlit nights, a woman in red was often seen on one of its branches with two feet leisurely dangling, looking up at the moon and seldom paying attention to people below. If one got closer, she'd disappear, but when one backtracked, she'd show up again. If one person stood under the tree, another in a room, the person under the tree saw nothing, but the person in the room saw her up on the tree. When she showed up, there was only the tree's shadow, but not hers. When a stone was thrown at her, the stone passed as through air; when a gunshot was fired at her, she vanished at the sound of the shot, but when the smoke cleared, she was still there. According to the landlord, "She has been there since I first bought this place, but she never causes us any harm, so we choose to live in peace with each other." Eventually, the landlord had the tree cut down, and the woman was never seen again. --Translated from Fantastic Tales by Ji Xiaolan

A tenant passed by a skull in the wilderness. For a prank, he peed in its mouth. To his surprise, the skull bounced up in outrage: 'Humans and ghosts should keep away from each other. Why did you humiliate me? More importantly, I'm a woman, you're a man, which makes your conduct even more disrespectful!' As the skull leapt higher and higher, it almost hit his face. The horrified tenant ran back home, but the ghost followed him there, sitting on top of the courtyard's wall and hurling insults at him well into night. The tenant was scared into a high fever and lost consciousness. His family kneeled down in front of the ghost, pleading for forgiveness. After the ghost cooled down a little bit, one of the family found the courage to ask about her name and address. She told them. The family kowtowed to her: 'So you're actually our great-great-grandmother? Why are you haunting your own descendent?' The ghost broke into tears, 'So you're my family? When did you move here? Who are you to me?' They answered each of her questions. The ghost was quite overwhelmed, 'I didn't mean to come here. The other ghosts encouraged me to harass you for offerings. Some of them are hovering at the patient's beside, others are waiting outside the door. Go fetch some wine and I'll persuade them to leave. Ghosts live in constant hunger. They dare not cause troubles for fear of gods' penalties. So when offended, they wouldn't let you go until you give them offerings. Try to avoid them in the future and don't fall into their traps.' The family promised to comply. A while later, the ghost said: 'They're already gone, but my mouth is still full of filthy odor. Find my skull where it was, wash it clean, and bury it properly.' With a few more sobs, she left. --Translated from Fantastic Tales by Ji Xiaolan #ghoststories #ghost #supernatural
