@MaksimGolivkin Indeed what would Russia emerge to without Putin. Is he the symptom or the root cause?

⚔️ How do democracies emerge? 💰 From a morning discussion with a friend… Looking at roughly 50 years of democratic transitions (≈1975–2025), one pattern stands out: most democracies emerge domestically, not through foreign intervention. 📊 Across ~85 transitions: ~59% domestic transitions (reforms, protests, elite bargains) ~18% post-Soviet transitions after the USSR collapse ~8% direct foreign military intervention ~7% peacekeeping / negotiated settlements after civil war ~8% indirect external pressure (sanctions, geopolitical shifts) Nearly 3 out of 4 democracies emerged without foreign troops on the ground. 🐉 P.S. If somebody takes out Putin today, I will be the first to celebrate it. But what happens to Russia after him? Stories like Charlie Wilson’s War — and the later history of the Taliban — are reminders that removing a ruler doesn’t necessarily remove the conditions that produced the ruler. Building a democracy is a much longer project than removing a regime.

Soldiers in the Middle East are about to go through a transformational up-skilling in drone warfare and counter-drone operations and technology. We should be grateful that #Ukraine, still fighting a war of survival, provides this assistance in people, tech and the intellectual aspects of drone warfare.

BREAKING: Zelensky reveals that Ukraine has already deployed anti-drone soldiers with low-cost drone interceptors to Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia to help in the fight against Iranian Shahed suicide drones.

Three sources tell 60 Minutes that undercover agents purchased a miniaturized microwave weapon from a Russian criminal network. Secret U.S. military lab testing of the device on rats and sheep has resulted in symptoms similar to Havana Syndrome, a confidential source says. cbsn.ws/4d7bHkz

@signulll We now get a lot more at a more fragmented quality. Related, i often feel that by depending on fewer people nearby we also received less meaning that used to satisfy our social needs. This somehow relates to crisis of meaning in modern humans

most ppl think capitalism reduces dependency on others because there is always an app or service for your problem but this isn’t the case… what capitalism at scale does is actually anonymizes dependency. today you’re more dependent than ever on vastly more people. you simply just don’t know any of them. the medieval peasant depended on maybe 150 people & knew them all by name. you depend on millions now & know zero of them.

Following the ongoing situation in Iran, I am convening a special Security College on Monday. For regional security and stability, it is of the utmost importance that there is no further escalation through Iran’s unjustified attacks on partners in the region.

Thanks for the thought-provoking piece. My main critique is that you are overemphasizing flashy but low probability events like “left-handed bacteria,” while merely giving lip service to the risk of extreme economic concentration of power, which is very real and materializing as we speak. Anthropic is reportedly raising funds at a $350B valuation, and the wealth created thus far has been concentrated into a few hundred (perhaps more like dozens) high net worth individuals / institutions. It’s looking increasingly likely to me that none of the leading AI labs will IPO until they reach valuations in the trillions, at which point retail investors will finally be able to get shares. In order for retail to get a 100x return on these investments, which was achievable for Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, the valuations of the AI labs will need to reach hundreds of trillions of dollars, meaning it’s likely too late for a more equitable redistribution of wealth. Simply put, you are currently exacerbating the problem. The consequences of this are that voters may take matters into their own hands and push for either or both 1) more aggressive / nonsensical forms of redistribution — the CA Founders’ Tax is just the beginning or 2) a drastic knee-capping of the AI industry in America, which make the CCP dominance scenario more likely. The solution is to enable retail ownership now, increasing the number of Americans with economic exposure to Anthropic and other AI labs from hundreds of people to millions.

Insurance is half price when Tesla self-driving is activated, because it increases safety so much
Sawyer Merritt@SawyerMerritt

NEWS: U.S. insurer Lemonade has announced that it will offer a 50% rate cut for drivers of @Tesla vehicles when FSD is steering because it had data showing it reduced accidents. “A car that sees 360 degrees, never gets drowsy, and reacts in milliseconds can’t be compared to a human. Beyond the product announcement today, we’re also announcing our commitment to the Tesla community – the safer FSD software becomes, the more our prices will drop,” said Shai Wininger, co-founder and president at Lemonade.
