Today’s hearing on the Ogiek Community case is a reminder of the long journey toward justice and recognition for indigenous communities across Africa. The African Court’s 2017 ruling in favor of the Ogiek was not only a win for the Ogiek but also a landmark decision affirming the vital role of indigenous communities in safeguarding our ecosystems and heritage. Yet, nearly seven years later, the directives remain unfulfilled. This hearing is crucial for reaffirming Kenya’s obligations under the African Charter, to which it has committed, and the rights of the Ogiek community to their ancestral lands.
