The government has recently announced the launch of free AI training courses for adults across the UK, aiming to reach 10 million workers by 2030. The courses are designed to help people build confidence using AI tools at work, as adoption of the technology accelerates across sectors. In BBC coverage of the announcement, BCS CEO Sharron Gunn welcomed the move, while emphasising that responsibility for adapting to AI cannot sit with workers alone, and that understanding of technology must extend to board level. 📈 What are the trends in demand for Computing degree subjects this year? Our new analysis of UCAS data shows a 42% increase in numbers of UK students beginning specialist AI degrees this year. But these still make up only 4% of the total students starting all undergraduate Computing courses at UK universities in September 2025. Larger courses like Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Computer Games and Animation still account for majority of the 31,670 total Computing first-year starters. And these also feature AI. This is the second highest number on record (despite numbers being 3% lower compared to 2024). The gap between men and women taking Computing courses has narrowed to 4:1, though still significant – and Computing degrees have a higher proportion of less advantaged students than HE as whole. 🔗 Read more: hubs.ly/Q03Y-Qv-0
