Birling Gap

Great news from Birling Gap where the new cafe has opened, shortly before the old one falls into the sea. The edge is still eroding, see the photo. The visitor centre has more on the history of this plus shipwrecks and RNLI rescues . Also, there are books, lots of them.

Low tide and a calm sea. More chalk can be seen on the beach as the edge collapses.

Life on the Edge Another beautiful evening with the sun setting over the Belle Tout lighthouse. The last group of walkers along the coastal path were making their way back to Eastbourne before it became too dark.

The coastguard cottages; one of these is still occupied. The rate at which the cliff is collapsing can be seen from the first photo in December 2016 and the most recent in April 2018. There is someone sitting under the edge reading a book; time to speed up to the last page.

Life on the Edge: coastal erosion at Birling Gap. The first photo, looking towards Seafors Head, was taken in August 2016. The middle one in December 2016 the last one was taken this afternoon on 5th April 2018. Soon the tables and chairs will be in the sea.

Spring has fimally arrived. The weather is beautiful and it's lambing time near Black Robin Farm near Beachy Head.

Living on the edge: Beautiful, peaceful, idyllic and if you are careless, lethal. The cliffs are eroding and nowhere is safe anymore.

A heavy engineering team are assembling a crane above Birling Gap to remove the steps down to the beach. The cliffs are disappearing.
