Wen phase 4 and 5, you ask? The wait is almost over, but here’s a quick status update on the latest engineering progress. During development, the community identified several areas of the protocol that need to be upgraded prior to the launch of phase 4 as making these changes after phase 5 goes live will be more difficult. These changes were not part of the original development schedule, but implementing them now will make future upgrades related to shielding rewards much easier. To carry out these upgrades, the community will need to conduct a hard fork in collaboration with all validators. This will involve selecting a future block height at which the chain will temporarily halt, giving us the opportunity to migrate the network state and perform manual updates across validator nodes as well as other services like indexers. Dedicated migration code has been prepared for node and indexer services, and the community is currently testing the upgrade on the Campfire testnet, which should wrap up in the next couple days. After this, we’ll coordinate a hard fork on the Housefire testnet. Once testing and validation are complete, we will coordinate the mainnet upgrade by selecting a block height for the fork and sharing detailed instructions with operators. Once the mainnet hard fork is completed, there will be no remaining technical barriers to moving quickly through phase 4 and 5. Thank you to everyone in the community for the patience as we work hard to make sure Namada is in the strongest technical position possible for phase 5. Building real privacy tools from scratch is a huge undertaking and Namada wouldn’t have made it this far without a strong foundation of community support.
