@schellhornmusic What a lovely tribute. Twenty years ago, I was married by Father Ray. But the impact he had on my person and my spiritual life was far more lasting and profound. Observational and Sardonic. To love being unknown. This was indeed the man. May he rest in peace.

**Bereavement** I am deeply saddened by the death of Fr Ray Matus, a priest I had known for 32 years. Fr Ray was a disarmingly down-to-earth man, with a unique blend of humility and insight. Our paths first crossed in the mid-1990s when he generously opened the doors of his church, The Holy Name in Manchester, for a concert of sacred choral music in which I performed. Among the works were Arvo Pärt's _Magnificat_ and Henryk Górecki's _Totus tuus_. Shortly after, I began attending his Masses, where, as a teenager, I learned not only about the Catholic faith but also about life itself. Fr Ray's ministry was marked by deep compassion, and he selflessly offered generous and meaningful pastoral care to several children at my school in Manchester, as I know he did for countless others. Like his spiritual father, St Philip Neri, he had a prodigious gift for insight into human nature, particularly the quirks and merits of individuals. His guiding philosophy was ‘amare nesciri’ – ‘to love being unknown’ – a principle that shaped both his humility and the often understated yet immense impact of his work. Perhaps his greatest legacy lies in the founding of the Manchester Oratory, a community born out of years of intense struggle, yet sustained by his unshakable faith and perseverance. I shall miss his conversation, which was often observational and sardonic. May he rest in peace.
