@mhudack @SlingMoney Need to reinstall from US App Store for that. Nothing will break if I do that right?

@mhudack Was just writing sitting here writing a 22 digit IBAN into a wire transfer thinking this is the dumbest thing in the world. Remembered @SlingMoney, had 10k USD in GBP in <60s. Magic!

Off to NYC today, starting a month in the US meeting the new team. Also taking a trip to Oregon to 🏃‍♀️ run Hood to Coast while we’re there. It’s gonna be a ride. Can’t wait!

@cantlin @mhudack To put it otherwise, there is evidence against the myth that publicly owned services can't be run efficiently, whereas there is no evidence that privatisation leads to better quality through the magic hand of capitalism, esp. for such public services.

I always wondered why they privatised the railroads in the UK. They seem to be effectively a public service funded by the taxpayer where all costs are socialised and all profits are privatised. And the private companies don’t even do a good job because they’ve got a monopoly.

@mhudack Curious what you mean by ‘outmoded notion of “fairness”’?

There's no structural reason why the UK can't be as rich as the United States (or Germany, for that matter). Everything that ails this country can be fixed with: * Better economic management; * A slight cultural shift towards dynamism and away from nostalgia and red tape * Replacing the dominant and outmoded notion of "fairness" which currently punishes everyone equally with one that gives everyone equal opportunity. And those things only require one thing -- great leadership at the Prime Ministerial level.

NEW: America is a rich country. Britain is a poor country with one wealthy region. People love to compare the UK to Mississippi, but it’s far more informative to look at UK subnationally, too. London ranks fairly well, the rest of the country does not 👉 ft.com/content/e5c741…

@mhudack In other words, the fact that rail services don’t participate in a consumer market isn’t the problem (or rather, it’s an inescapable reality). The problem is public sector employees don’t generally work in a transparent internal market for good ideas, speed and execution.

@mhudack In fairness, I don’t think this is totally wrong. But with a couple of simple changes you can have a public institution that also works: 1. Public services must have public dashboards with metrics and targets 2. Performance and pay are tied to success (as in the private sector)

@mhudack Feature request for whoever picks this up 😇 "Quick Sync" – make an async ask to a team member for a 5m VC. Customizable urgency level. Hangs around until "Picked Up" or retracted. Attendees go into "Ducked Out" state from current meeting. 🦆

@neillyneil The space before the double question mark really lands additional impact. Like the pause before a "...you what?"

Just watched Personal Shopper - which was in my BFI Player watchlist forever. It's a perplexing mix of ghost story, thriller & char study - but Kristen Stewart nails it. Most perplexing of all: her spaces before punctuation in text messages, and abandoning every drink she buys!

@willguv There are some good reasons GOV.UK might want an app – lots of countries have useful ones. The red flag here is that the “priority” is “build an app,” not articulating the underlying value to people.

A critical organisational asset to anyone, especially PMs, is to have people you can talk to *before* you can frame the problem. When it's just a mess in your head. These trusted folks accelerate getting to framing, where you can scale the solving exercise.
