I’m leaving with my wife for a digital detox weekend to a cabin in the middle of the woods in Belgium 🇧🇪 Phone will stay on airplane mode the entire time. We are only taking one of them disposable cameras to snap some pictures. Hot tub, board games, Champagne, wood stove. Might never come back.

Son of a bitch, it worked! 🥳 - Bun backend with Vue-powered reactivity - Controlling a synchronized routine 1000 phone screens - Sync corrected for system time offset with NTP It worked better than I would have ever imagined. Thanks for everything supporting me on this talk ❤️

the cloud is dead. openclaw replaced all my devops tooling. I went from 360$/month in AWS costs using opentofu and grafana to manage clusters, machines, buckets, and logs to 2,340$/month in LLM APIs and 15 hours of outages. adapt or be left behind.

Only in Luxembourg you get this kind of language switching. All within 5 minutes: 🇲🇽 Telling my wife in Spanish I’m going to the baker 🇬🇧 Small talk the woman in front of me of in the queue in English 🇱🇺 Greeting the baker in Luxembourgish 🇩🇪 Depositing my order in German (although he understands Luxembourgish I know German is easier for him) 🇱🇺 Goodbye in Luxembourgish 🇲🇽 Back to my wife speaking in Spanish And this is rural Luxembourg

2025 was not an easy year for me, but certainly an interesting and successful one. In January I received a 5-digit bill of taxes I had to pay back. This basically fucked up the rest of my year. I was also in the last stretch of my flight training - I couldn't go 2 years of work just go to waste. 💸 In February, the company I worked for mentioned that my position might not be guaranteed anymore. (They didn't fire me, but put me in a huge pit of uncertainty). 😳 I immediately had to act and looked for a new opportunity. And I couldn't have had a better company to take me in as @directus. I am so happy at that company for many different reasons. 🐰 But I couldn't start right away because I had a notice period of 3 months in the other company. It was hard to still give my all, even though I knew I wouldn't be part of it anymore. But after all - I'm a professional. In March I joined Vue.js Amsterdam as MC and videographer. This year was hard because unfortunately my usual partner in the video stuff Tim couldn't make it. But I managed to deliver a nice result. 🎥 In May I visited my wife's family in Mexico and attended @RenderATL for the first time. 🍑 This left me 5 weeks without flying, but on June 25th I still managed to pass my skill test and get my pilot's license. 👨‍✈️ In July I started finally working at my new job. Which also at first was daunting because I worked in such a professional codebase and with extraordinary people that I quickly developed impostor syndrome. It took me a bit of time, but now I feel way more comfortable around the code base. 💪 In September/October I got to attend the coolest company retreat you can imagine: Sardinia 🇮🇹 I had a blast meeting the team in person and connect with everyone. In October, my wife's family visited us from Mexico, which was combined with a lot of travel throughout Europe - which was a ton of fun. 🇫🇷🇨🇭🇩🇪🇧🇪 The rest of the year wasn't very eventful. Except that I finally got to fly around on my own, taking my wife to a few very cool adventures. 🛩️ Since July I flew exactly 22 hours 25 minutes, made 35 landings, and tracked around 1400km. --- Some other things I did: 🤩 I amazed my wife (she was in awe after her first flight with me) 🚗 I did roadtrips (Belgium, Switzerland, Germany) 🎒 I did a backpack-only trip (to Paris) ☕️ I started roasting my own beans 🗣️ I gave a conference talk (@RenderATL) 🏋️‍♀️ I reached my ideal weight (although in the last months I gained a bit again) --- What's in it for me next year? Who knows, but I have plans. Mainly, keeping the flying up and do some great adventures. But I also have a list of cool things I want to do which I wrote out in my Bingo 2026 card: marc.dev/goals/2026

For gta3, Vice and SA; Memory on the ps2 was tight. We had to limit the number of used vehicle models to 8. My code would occasionally pick a car model to be phased out. Once there were none left on the map, this model would be removed and a new model could be loaded. The code would pick a model that was appropriate for the area (sports cars in business district, old cars in run-down areas etc). Most of the time this worked fine. A few things could throw a spanner in the works: If the player had gone up the wanted levels, some of the 8 slots would be taken up by police cars, FIB and swat vans and the police heli. Level designers would sometimes load specific car models for missions. Often these were not appropriate to be used for ambient traffic. Ambulance and firetrucks could be needed if there was an accident. If the player travelled to a different area of the map; some of the loaded cars would look out of place and could not be used. It would take a while for replacement models to be loaded. The game would keep the last player driven car, as it would be jarring if the player went back and it wasn’t there. At times there would only be 1 or 2 cars models available for ambient traffic. This lack of variation was particularly noticeable if the player was driving the one car that had to be used. To alleviate the problem, garages remove cars inside of them once the door has closed. This way the model could be removed. When the player opened the door, the cars were re-created in the same spot. Npc models were loaded/removed the same way. It just wasn’t as noticeable if variety was lacking. For each game we picked a generic looking character model that looked appropriate in each area of the map. This model was never removed and always ready to fill in.
