Colleagues: I want to flag a fairly sophisticated phishing / impersonation attempt that may be of relevance to others in academia, policy, and media. Over the past few days, I was contacted by an individual claiming to be a journalist from a well known newspaper, requesting a rapid expert review of a column on Iran–US–Israel dynamics. The approach was plausible, time-sensitive, and aligned with the kind of requests many of us regularly receive. However, several warning signs emerged: - The draft shared was low-quality and inconsistent with expected editorial standards - A follow-up WhatsApp call raised questions about identity and background - I was later asked to access the article via an external link, with instructions to override browser security protections - The email address appeared legitimate, but upon closer inspection resolved to a spoofed Proton Mail account - A direct test email to the supposed media address bounced Clearly, a very coordinated phishing attempt involving: - Media brand impersonation - Trust-building through staged interaction (email → WhatsApp → document sharing) - Attempted redirection to a malicious or credential-harvesting site These approaches are becoming more targeted and credible, particularly for analysts, researchers, and commentators who are used to rapid media engagement. Be careful. Sharing in case useful to others in similar positions.
