Meet Kunal Shah, a MBA dropout with no degree and no backup plan in 2004. Twenty-two years later, he has gone from startup founder to the man chosen to lead WhatsApp globally.
Born in Mumbai, Kunal Shah initially studied philosophy before joining an MBA program, which he eventually left. Instead of taking the conventional route, he chose entrepreneurship. He launched multiple ventures, experienced failures, and learned through experimentation.
In 2010, he founded FreeCharge, which was acquired by Snapdeal, giving him the confidence to build again.
In 2018, he launched CRED with a simple idea: reward people for paying credit card bills on time. Many doubted the concept, but Kunal focused on trust and premium user experience. CRED grew into one of India's fastest-growing fintech companies and was valued at over $6 billion at its peak.
Now, in 2026, Meta has appointed Kunal Shah as the new global head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart, making him one of the few Indian entrepreneurs to lead a product used by billions of people worldwide.
