It’s hard, but I never expected it to be easy. I know what all of this means, and what I can say today is that I’m learning what perseverance really means, every single day, from my son. Yes, that might sound strange. Usually parents teach their children, but if you’re not a parent yet, let me tell you something: you have a lot to learn from your kids, more than you can imagine!!! We spent the last two weeks in Moldova, in Chișinău, so Victor could do MedeK therapy. With SMA, nobody really knows what is “best” yet. Many are still figuring things out. And believe me, in the last three years I’ve seen more doctors and specialists than I ever thought I would in my life. The good part is that this time we found someone who really knew what he was doing. Victor has contractures in his knees and cannot fully straighten his legs, I was amazed that his therapist understood the issue immediately and started working exactly where needed. For two weeks, twice a day, morning and afternoon, Victor trained one hour each session. MedeK challenges the muscles through different leverage positions, helping create new movement patterns, movements his brain doesn’t naturally activate because of SMA. It was intense, it was hard to watch him cry during some exercises, but I was also incredibly proud, actually super proud, my boy is a superhero!!! A 4-year-old who refuses to give up. Who pushes and pulls with everything he has just to straighten his little legs a bit more. That kind of strength… I haven’t seen it anywhere else. I will not give up until I know I’ve done everything in my power to give him the best chance at independence. Bookmark this!💪🏼 Outside of therapy, we barely left the house. It was -17°C in Chișinău. Infrastructure is difficult. Even schools were closed because the streets were literally ice rinks. Some things broke my heart. Treatments for SMA are not covered in Moldova and when we met another family with a child with the same condition, they told us something that stayed with me and made me think like: oh boy… how this world works… They said they don’t like highways. When they drove to Romania for medical checks, they felt scared like the wheels were slipping and they might overturn when cars passed them. They preferred their local roads. I mean, can you imagine this? Woah… 🥲 maybe it’s just me but this made me sad The roads there are in very bad condition, often not even properly lit, I was shocked. It’s sad. Hopefully their leaders will do something in this direction, they really need it. But I’m grateful that there are still strong families who refuse to give up, no matter what.💪🏼 This year we will keep going back to Chișinău because we decided to try this path too for at least 1 year to see if there will be some improvements. Never give up. 💚
