I’m a content moderator at Teleperformance Kenya, and I need to speak out about the reality of our work. The post about Ladi’s tragic death (@C_NyaKundiH) misses the truth: working here is brutal, especially for Kenyans like us. Let me explain our side.

Tragic Death of Content Moderator in Nairobi Sparks Workplace Welfare Discussions The passing of a Nigerian expatriate working for Teleperformance Kenya has reignited discussions on employee welfare in the content moderation industry. The deceased, identified as a content moderator, reportedly fell ill in late February, was granted sick leave, and later missed work before being found unresponsive at her residence. Teleperformance has reached out to the deceased's family and is working with authorities in the ongoing investigation. A colleague who worked closely with the deceased shared a note, stating, "Content moderation is not an easy job, Cyprian. Even for myself, I don’t plan to stay here for more than two years, I’m saving to start my own business or maybe get another better job. That said, Teleperformance is a great company to work for, better than my previous employer who didn't pay us any close to what I earn today. As for Ladi, she got unwell due to a personal matter she didn’t want to disclose to other colleagues. It’s unfortunate that some are using this case to jeopardize our jobs and opportunities." Teleperformance reaffirmed its commitment to employee wellness, highlighting its 24/7 counselling services, wellness breaks, and a counselor-to-moderator ratio of 1:38, surpassing the industry average of 1:75. The company, recently named among Fortune’s Top 5 Best Workplaces, also noted its competitive salaries, four to five times Kenya’s statutory minimum wage. While the content moderation industry faces ongoing discussions over mental health concerns, Teleperformance maintains that its wellness programmes exceed industry standards. Some labour advocates argue for stronger protections, but discussions continue on how best to support workers in this field. The incident has sparked wider conversations about the pressures faced by content moderators, with some questioning the effectiveness of workplace wellness programmes across the sector. The balance between job demands and mental health remains a key issue in discussions about industry conditions. Investigations are ongoing, as authorities wait to see if the family of the deceased will consent to the release of postmortem results issued by the police yesterday. Colleagues of the deceased are paying their last respects at a memorial held this evening.

6/ A company that boasts about gender equality left a woman to die alone. A company making €10.28 billion in revenue wouldn’t grant a worker the dignity of rest. Now, instead of fixing these injustices, they silence workers.

5/ Empowered? Balanced? Where was Ladi’s empowerment when she was ignored? Where was her well-being when she was denied rest, isolated, and left to die alone? @Teleperformance sells the world a lie.

4/ And it didn’t stop there. Another women’s wellness post is still up on their LinkedIn page: “TP hosted an aerial yoga session in Lithuania as part of our well-being initiative. Cheers to wellness and inspiring change! #TPWomen #Proud2beTP

A Nigerian TikTok content moderator was found dead in Kenya. Coworkers claim she had been denied leave several times but her employer - Teleperformance - denies it. Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi’s family had not seen her since she came to Nairobi in 2022 and are desperate for answers

Ladi’s death should wake people up. BPOs like Teleperformance need to stop treating us as disposable profit machines. We deserve fair pay, real mental health support, and protection—not empty wellness programs or NDAs that gag us. This isn’t just our fight—it’s everyone’s.
