@CharlieBakerMA So many people are uninformed about how CFB got here. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma v NCAA antitrust lawsuit officially began in the Western District of Oklahoma shortly after the universities filed their complaint on September 8, 1981.

The Sorsby decision was never about only one student-athlete. We are already seeing downhill effects in other eligibility cases in which state courts are allowing student-athletes to circumvent longstanding eligibility rules, citing Sorsby outcome as part of the court’s precedent. Another example of why we need Congress to pass the Protect College Sports Act, authorizing the association to apply common sense eligibility rules consistently for all student-athletes and schools, regardless of the state or local court system.

@RossDellenger This is why the Sorsby case was never just a Texas Tech story. Once eligibility decisions move from conference and NCAA governance structures to a patchwork of courtrooms, the question becomes who is actually governing college sports.

@RossDellenger If you take ncaa to court you should not be allowed to do it in local jurisdictions where you will not get fair rulings. Go look at how much money Cody Campbell has donated to these judges

@cskinney @DanWolken @RossDellenger @YahooSports He can't sue for that lmao. He would lose. TONS of players are cut from teams EVERY YEAR. It's not a winnable thing in court for a player. Especially if they broke contracts. They all have morality clauses in scholarships and NIL deals.

Texas Tech and mega-booster Cody Campbell have agency in the Brendan Sorsby mess. They could cut him loose and tell him he can’t play for them. Instead, they’d rather embarrass themselves. Column for @yahoosports sports.yahoo.com/college-footba…

@RossDellenger Scheduling should be taking out of the AD's and conference hand and should be done at a league level. ELIMINATE BUY GAMES and create a 70 team league where everyone plays everyone.

@cskinney @RossDellenger Schools already get stipends from the university and govt. None can afford to pay players so they have to get boosters to do it. When they get tired of it, things fix themselves due to no money. Or they lose college sports.

A new class-action lawsuit has been filed in California against the NCAA, power leagues and College Sports Commission, claiming the new NIL clearinghouse violates state statutes and federal laws and is a “conspiracy” to suppress athletes’ NIL earnings bit.ly/4xeb6oR

@Khazzeron @DanWolken @RossDellenger @YahooSports “It’s not retaliation” LOL Sorsby was highly sought after by many of the top programs in the country. Tech offered a multi-million dollar NIL package to be their starting QB. Then they just cut him. Sorsby wouldn’t even need Jeffrey Kessler to win a retaliation suit.

@cskinney @DanWolken @RossDellenger @YahooSports It's not retaliation. There is no rule saying Tech can't do that. A judge CAN NOT make a team use or keep a player. That's not a thing, and they do not have the power to do that by law. They can't do it. Not hard to understand. The NCAA can't retaliate. There is a big difference.

@Khazzeron @DanWolken @RossDellenger @YahooSports Yes, the investigation is complete and the Judge filed the injunction. Therefore, as of right now, legal he's in the clear. If Tech were to cut him, it could easily be considered retaliation. The kid justreceived an injuction no one thought he'd get. He'd 100% sue.

@cskinney @DanWolken @RossDellenger @YahooSports The investigation is done. Texas Tech is not mentioned in the injunction; it just says he can play football somewhere and the NCAA atm can't say no. It doesn't say he HAS to play at Tech or Tech HAS to let him play there. Now, they will let him cause Tech has no spine but still.

@ugacdawg @DanWolken @RossDellenger @YahooSports Just one option: If a school removes an athlete before completing an investigation/without following due process, that action may be unlawful, and the athlete could challenge it In such cases, the athlete may seek reinstatement or damages.

@bruce_straughan Pete Rose was a paid employee of a MLB franchise. Unitl the NCAA regains power from conferneces and determines that their athletes are the actual product of a multi-billion dollar industry they will continue to be challenged by the courts. Employ your athletes!!!

@NicoleAuerbach It’s starts with strong league leadership who can take the power back from the conferences. Then they need to reduce the number of top tier programs and separate public and private institutions. Saving Seventy is the best way to sort things!

Wrote about this a few years ago. Talked to a ton of labor lawyers about how complicated this is (how do you define the bargaining unit? private vs public schools, etc.) Worth a read even with a different NLRB/federal agency environment: nytimes.com/athletic/53139…
Matt Brown@MattBrownEP

He's right about this, but there are also two solutions to this problem 1) make the employer of the athletes a third party entity that ISN'T a public university (such as the CFP, USA Basketball, etc) 2) Change the NLRA and create a seperate category for athletes.

@Big12Bam @JeffreyNKirk Tell me 1 program that would do that. Ole Miss, LSU, Ohio State, Bama, UT. Hell no! They’d 100% play him. How about those Christian programs like Baylor (rape allegations) & Liberty (they hired Baylor’s AD McCaw and Freeze after hiring escorts. Come on!

At this point, Texas Tech needs to part way with Sorsby. Even if it requires that you potentially have to eat $5 million in NIL money to make the situation go away. They seem to be willing to put the entire program in jeopardy over this. If they cannot see that, then they deserve everything coming their way. All of this over one player…

@utahfootballgm From '62 to '99 utah went 200 - 208 against those WAC powerhouses like SDSU, WY & NMU. Urban Meyer turned things around from 03-04 before giving way to Whittingham. For a subpar G6 team with roots in the RMC/MSAC/Skyline/WAC/MWC, Utah is very lucky to be where they are now.

Be Texas Tech football: - Suck forever - Have an all time winning percentage of .557 (utah's in .597) - Become new money rich - Buy every player you can - Get your back blown out by Oregon's most pathetic team in decades in the CFP - Rinse and repeat

@CFBTalkDaily He will file a lawsuit against Texas Tech if they remove him from the team. The only thing Tech can do is bench him for the season and there's not a D1 FBS program around that would do that.

The best time for Texas Tech to cut ties with Brendan Sorsby was months ago when this started The second best time is now Juice isn’t worth the squeeze He is a good quarterback but he is not worth tarnishing your programs integrity. If he plays a single snap this season I won’t look at tech the same

Why is Tech convinced that everyone has an ulterior motive to see them punished? They think everyone secretly hates Tech. “Tech vs everybody!” No… Tech is completely irrelevant. Most people can’t point to Lubbock on a map People want to stop this because it’s bad for the sport.
