In 1883, the Jat population of Ludhiana was 222,665, owning 62% of the land. Of these, 43% were classified as “Hindu.” Jats classified as Hindu followed Sakhi Sarwar (Sultanias), worshipped at ancestral jatheras, and observed clan-based deities with faith rooted in the village and got rather than scriptures.
As the British noted, a Jat’s religion was often “a matter of locality”, the same got and lineage could be Hindu in one village, Sikh in the next and Muslim across the river.
The influence of the Singh Sabha movement on Jat village chiefs led to widespread adoption of Sikhi, transforming Ludhiana from a near balance of Hindu and Sikh Jats into a predominantly Sikh region within a few generations.

By the close of the nineteenth century, most Jat clans of Majha had not yet embraced Sikhi. According to the customs reported in the Digest of Customary Law, published in 1929 on the tribal customs prevailing in Punjab, Jat clans in the Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts, including Kaler, Randhawa, Sarai and Ghumman were classified as Hindu Jats. The source is W. H. Rattigan, a British judge who spent decades documenting the customary laws of Punjab. This also explains the recruitment of Jats from Gurdaspur into the Jat Regiment rather than the Sikh Regiment up to the early twentieth century (as mentioned in the right snippet).
