The farmer’s closing move is elegant but slightly dishonest. Maneuvering the activist into appearing to say cows shouldn’t exist is a rhetorical victory not an intellectual one. The activist’s actual position that the system of breeding and exploitation shouldn’t exist got compressed into an absurdist endpoint the activist never actually argued for. Winning that way doesn’t settle the underlying ethical question.

Activist: "Milking causes cows enormous pain." Farmer: "What makes you think that?" Activist: "They're being forcibly milked." Farmer: "She walked in on her own and put her head in the feed station." Activist: "She's been conditioned to." Farmer: "She's also in significant discomfort if I don't milk her." Activist: "Because you've bred her to overproduce." Farmer: "Because she's a mammal who has calved and needs to be milked. Same as any nursing mother who misses a feed." Activist: "It's still painful." Farmer: "Not being milked is painful. Being milked is relief." Activist: "You're reframing exploitation as kindness." Farmer: "I'm describing what happens when a full udder isn't emptied." Activist: "Which wouldn't happen if you didn't breed them." Farmer: "Which wouldn't happen if cows didn't exist. We're back to the beginning." Activist: "Cows shouldn't exist?" Farmer: "You said it. Not me."

If the US and Russia reach any kind of deal that allows Russia a US partnership in the arctic and access to Alaska's mineral resources then the US will not only be funding Russia's war against Ukraine but also helping prepare the invasion of Canada and the rest of Europe.

It's a great idea, rescue a dog, don't buy a pup. If only it were so easy. My age is wrong. My house is wrong. My car is wrong. My politics are wrong. My activities are wrong. I wouldn't make it through the front door of a rescue centre, despite owning Labradors for decades. No wonder rescue centres struggle to rehome. I'll be going to a reputable breeder.
