Most Americans (especially the center and left) don’t even care that our taxes pay for your security. I warned a year or two ago that Americans will shrug off insults for years and just roll our eyes…. until we don’t. That’s how the American psyche works. We don’t care until we do. Then we all get pissed off at once and do something irrational. I don’t know why. It just is. The entire left and big portions of the right aren’t pleased that we hit Iran. Many would agree with the points you’re making. But at the end of the day, we are Americans. We will give you a long leash, but when it runs out, we jerk the chain back hard. NOBODY wants the Strait of Hormuz to remain shut. Nobody, or at least very few, want Europeans to suffer a massive energy crisis. But frankly, we are fed up with the rhetoric. And if you don’t think we’ll cut off our nose to spite our face, you don’t know Americans at all. You can push and jeer and mock and scorn us for years, even decades. But when Americans snap, it will happen quickly and without warning. And we are very close to the breaking point.

If Europe decides you are a theat, and a bad economic prospect, we can flood the market with them, and kill your economy overnight. I'd also remind you, only the US has triggered Article 5. @pearsonm103 @mtntallpaul You gain a rapid deployment position for nukes, based in locations across Europe which are not US territory. Your largest air base and your largest military hospital outside of US soil is in Europe.

@pearsonm103 @mtntallpaul With the rest of NATO, you more than double the size of the military available, including a lot of specialist units that you don't have many of (e.g. cold weather troops and armour). You rely on the UK for most of your radio / phone intelligence and to track Russian subs.

@pearsonm103 @mtntallpaul More directly, you gain global projection using our bases and our air space. You shrink to a regional power without them. You can't even fly to the middle east without going via Germany or the UK. Your missile defence relies on having radars and interceptors on our territory.

They push a narrative, just as you do. They falsely claim the BBC was "calling for dogs to be banned" & similar. A lie.

I have in fact read both the BBC article and the Spiked commentary on it. I am also a longtime consumer of BBC news and current affairs output. Regarding the BBC article itself, there is little if anything in it with which I would disagree. What did trouble me was the timing of it and its underlying message. The article emerged at a time when some vocal adherents of Islam have sought increasingly stringent restrictions on the contexts in which dogs may be permitted to be present, and despite the fact that the Quran itself contains absolutely no admonition that dogs are unclean. This has understandably become a controversial issue. The BBC seems to think it is part of its role not simply to report on such controversies, but to actually seek to defuse them. In this case, the underlying message of the article appears to be that it's not unreasonable to object to the presence of dogs, lots of people do, so by implication why criticise those adherents of Islam who feel a similar antipathy? You may disagree with that interpretation, which you are perfectly entitled to do, but to many people including me, it doesn't seem that far fetched, partly because we have noted similar behaviour by the BBC before. In this case, the lie by omission in the article seems to be the omission of the very context I have described above. More generally, my remarks refer to the increasingly obvious tendency of the BBC to omit vital context, essential to forming a balanced judgement on contentious matters, even when reporting the most serious of national and international events. I am sorry that you chose to make your point in a somewhat chiding and judgemental manner. Perhaps it is not me who engaged in rage baiting.

It was about allergies, phobias and the increasing number of dog friendly venues. You don't get to rewrite the story.
