One of the biggest problems with the sanitized way far too many Americans understand history is that we do not believe our country has ever done anything wrong. So we never even arrive at considering how we have directly harmed those who see us as enemies today.

It is truly staggering to witness just how much devastation the American public is willing to shrug off with total indifference as long as their Amazon packages are delivered and their own families are safe

I know the brain badly wants to go numb and not see this but: $5.6 BILLION. $5.6 BILLION to achieve: murdered elementary school kids, a new Iranian leader like the old one, toxic rain, environmental disaster, destroyed water resources, dead US soldiers, damaged historic sites.

The problem with statements like these is that they get their history fundamentally wrong. Hayden is assuming that minimum setbacks, minimum lot sizes, and single-use zoning came about beause little design committees came together in every city in America and independently decided that these were the essential design features they wanted. Newsflash: Local desires had nothing to do with any of these zoning rules. These zoning rules originated in model codes promoted by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the secondary mortgage securities market they facilitated. To make the houses within a jurisidiction eligible for federally insured/securitized mortgages, they said, a municipality had to adopt these zoning restrictions. Why? Because that's how the brainiac central planners on Wall Street thought they could make a house hold its value for the life of a 30-year mortgage. That's how these restrictions spread across the country and became so pervasive –– by the dictates of distant financiers with too much power over who gets bank loans and what they need to do to get it. So, while I appreciate the project of YIMBYs like Hayden and the fact that we really do need to reform zoning laws, it would behoove all of us, I think, to be areful about this idea that the "free market" will just build these beautiful buildings for us if only our pesky government and its pesky laws would get out of the way. It was, after all, out-of-control reliance on the benevelonce of "free [financial] markets" that got us here in the first place.
Hayden@the_transit_guy

It’s hard to stress how illegal it is for the free market to build buildings like this in the United States.

Masked ICE agents, it seems, are now killing American citizens on American streets. Any Democrat who doesn’t support abolishing ICE should be instantly primaried and run out of the party. This is non negotiable. You cannot support the existence of this fascist secret police.

Hi @DHSgov, We’re the folks who reported the facts you’re now dismissing. So just a reminder: We found 170+ cases of immigration agents detaining U.S. citizens this year. In dozens of cases, charges have never been filed or the cases were dismissed. Among the detained: nearly 20 children, including two with cancer. propublica.org/article/immigr…
Homeland Security@DHSgov

Stop fear-mongering. ICE does NOT arrest or deport U.S. citizens. If a U.S. citizen is arrested, it is because they have obstructed or assaulted law enforcement. What makes someone a target for immigration enforcement is if they are illegally in the U.S.—NOT their skin color, race, or ethnicity. Secretary Noem has been clear: rioters will not stop us or slow us down.

I'm currently reading a comparison of health systems globally. There are about 4 sentences that really sum it up. 1/4: “The United States is the only developed country that lets insurance companies profit from basic health coverage”

Trump’s EO designating ANTIFA as a domestic terrorist org is worded so that anyone protesting ICE agents, filming or asking them for ID, or informing people of their rights, can be charged as a domestic terrorist. This isn’t an attack on ANTIFA. It’s an attack on our rights.
