From a high school principal: "The drive for 5 is killing conferences...The quality of football for teams and coaches that have 2-3 games left in a season and knowingly can’t get to 5 wins…it’s awful for student safety and gives kids nothing to play for."

It's official. The proposal to expand the IHSA playoffs has passed. Each class will now have 48 teams in the playoffs. The season will start a week earlier with a shortened period for preseason practices. The expectation is all 3-6 and some 2-7 teams will qualify.

52 teams finished 2-7 last season. Three of them (Plainfield North, Jersey, Glenbrook North) managed to beat one team with a winning record. Most of them only beat teams with 1 or 0 wins. But a fairly significant number of those 2-7 teams are playoff bound next year......
