R.E.M. Secret Gig Shirts 🧵 A little personal project I decided to undertake on a whim. I’ve always loved the fact that R.E.M. used a bunch of pseudonyms for secret gigs over the years, so I thought I’d design a bootleg shirt for each of the ones I know about.

@ethan_iverson I tried making a living that way for a year or two when I first arrived in NYC. Didn't work out, the main problem being that I'm a lousy pianist. Did play for Alvin Ailey himself, once – he was very kind.

In the 1990s, I supported myself almost entirely through playing for dance classes. It was a lot of fun and I always learned something every day. At least two of my heroes, Roland Hanna and Andrew Cyrille, played for dance class, not to mention important composers like John Cage.
