@gridironborn Such a great movie. Particularly inspiring given the current dumpster fire that is America and the world these days

Getting ready to see Project Hail Mary at my local theatre. Many of the seats have a sponsorship plate for those that helped rehab the theatre. Thinking about buying one with the inscription: In memory of Theodore Donald "Donny" Kerabatsos, who loved bowling 🎳

@BillTZimmerman Bill, this was a super insightful (and nuanced) podcast episode. Hard to see any other reason for their actions, although I will say maybe we need to wait until later in the offseason (perhaps LV drops the price for Maxx, or we sign Jordan, etc.).

So to summarize the Bears finances conversation over the last week... Schefter's "broke" source was from the Bears org. Kap's source says the Bears don't want to spend more this year because Darnell Wright needs an extension this year, Caleb and Rome next year, and Burden and Loveland the year after that. The Kap source says Bears want to be smart so they can keep all their guys. What no one wants to discuss is that the cap is going to go up $150 to $200m in the next 5 years. The cap currently is accelerating faster than player salaries. So if the cap isn't an issue, and the Bears don't want to spend money in 2026 because of cash they need to spend in 2027 and 2028, that's decision is either by necessity or by choice. We can argue tone, we can argue message, but everyone is actually coming to the same conclusion.

@VanLathan Crash is garbage, it is billed as a movie about discrimination, but it seems to say that everyone is racist instead of addressing power dynamics, etc. Prime example of whitewashing racism.

Okay so in Crash a white LAPD officer sexually assaults a Black woman in front of her husband. The husband and wife then have major relationship issues because the husband is emasculated. Later, that same cop saves that same wife from burning alive in her car after an accident. They embrace after he saved her. He sexually assaulted her earlier. That part is tough.

Why do you guys all hate Crash so much? Don’t get mad at me for asking but I get chastised every time I bring this movie up. No, Crash didn’t deserve to win Best Picture. But it’s not a bad movie & I think worse films have won the award. Give me a reason you guys don’t like Crash

@HogeAndJahns @AdamHoge It's not hard to imagine a league with as many problematic owners as the NFL (re: racism) getting this wrong. The shame is, our owner is the rare one who actually cares about improving racial equity. Hope the media keep this story alive.

@IrishBearsShow I'll note that Braxton was not healthy all year. Prior to that, he was at worst, and average LT. With an actual offseason to prep and not recover from surgery, I think he'll be fine. I think it's unfair to judge him based on last year.

The reality is LT is a problem and will continue to be until the Bears know how Ozzy is doing through the year. They were always going stopgap after investing a high pick in Ozzy. I don’t like it but it’s the situation they’re in. I’d still bring in more OL to compete.

@WCGridiron @gridironborn And then just add that up for the season and see if your QB was overall better or worse than the QB averages. Imperfect stat, for sure, just wondering if something like this exists

@WCGridiron @gridironborn Jeff, wondering if there's a way to create a simple statistic that looks at (cumulative, through every week) QBR vs. a team compared to your QB. For instance, say the avg QBR vs. Packers up to our game 2 weeks ago was 42, and Caleb was 48 (made up numbers)....Caleb is +4.

@robertkschmitz Johnson is my top choice, but let's not pretend McCarthy sucks. Dude wins 10+ games whenever his QB isn't injured. Cowboys played hard for him. People slobber over Tomlin, but McCarthy is, at worst, about the same. And he knows how to run an org.

In *my opinion* it’s scary to bet your team’s future on someone that (now two) other orgs decided wasn’t good enough. McCarthy is still in my “acceptable” category for a reason — it can get worse! But he’s available because a second org doesn’t want him. There is no “safe” hire.
Javy Dopez@DopezJavy

@robertkschmitz Why couldn't McCarthy be " a wealth of experience+ fresh perspective"? I do agree he's the worst possible option, but also needs to be given more credit. Having to work like a guy like Jerry Jones couldn't have been easy.

@IrishBearsShow If he opts for the Raiders, either it needs to be for stupid money or Johnson isn't as smart as we all think. That roster is much worse, and the organization is, at best, as messy as the Bears. I think this is all made-up nonsense.

If Ben Johnson does go to the Raiders good luck to him. He’ll be entering a division with arguably 3 of the best HCs in football, a dominant Chiefs dynasty and joining a team with : - No QB - A bottom 5 Roster - A team that’s had 11 HCs in the last 15 Years If he takes on that challenge fair play to him because that’s really backing your ability. Can’t say I would take that risk.

@BillTZimmerman Odds this is a way to cover if Johnson wants his own GM and they can Poles when they hire Johnson (if that’s his demand)? Have to imagine this is what’s happening, unless they are that dumb (they might be)

Are they going to lame duck Ryan Poles with a new coach? Is that actually going to happen? Are they going to do this the absolute worst way possible and draft a QB in 2024, hire a head coach in 2025 and a GM in 2026? My head hurts.

@IrishBearsShow Poles' insistence on being smarter than everyone that early in the draft has killed him. Do it on a 5th or 6th rounder. But his 3rds and drafting a punter in the 4th with so many other needs shows how much he needs to improve at his craft.

A reason US foreign policy doesn’t change even as public opinion changes is the old adage “personnel is policy.” The more time you spend around FP advisors, staffers, and think tankers in DC, the more you notice it’s the same people and they all know each other, often for decades

@robertkschmitz They're going to likely get killed the next 3 games, and then have a 10 day break. Perfect time to can Flus. That's my optimistic take on this. I think Flus is a giant issue, and his conservative approach stuck to Waldron, too. (Waldron should have been fired, to be clear)

Change is good, but I worry this is too little too late. Thomas Brown starts his tenure against a matchup that’s always tough. To me, this feels like the beginning of the end for Eberflus — Shane makes 3 fired coordinators in 3 years. Not great!
Tom Pelissero@TomPelissero

Sources: Shane Waldron is out as #Bears offensive coordinator. Thomas Brown is expected to take over.

@BillTZimmerman Are you suggesting keep Flus was a bad idea? :) I think so much of this is on Flus, there was absolutely no reason to keep him this offseason. And I completely think his conservative philosophy was reinforced on everyone.

Do we think the now fired offensive coordinator that liked to take deep shots in Seattle did this or the conservative defensive-minded head coach who likes to tell his QBs to never turn the ball over and never take a sack and smack the Caleb Williams out of Caleb Williams?
