@daniellloyd1 Out of interest which school... I live in the Christchurch area also so may face this problem in the near future. Would love children to be able to cycle to school safely but cycling infrastructure is so so poor in this area.

There's a comprehensive school 25 minutes walk or 10 minutes bike ride from our house. However, because catchment areas are decided by borders rather than proximity, we are not in the catchment area, and so there wasn't space for our younger son. Instead, he's in a (perfectly good) school 6 miles from home. There is no direct bus route, no train route, and it's not currently feasible for him to ride alone. It means 120 miles of extra car journeys per week, almost 5000 miles a year, well over 30,000 over the 7 years he'll be there. This isn't a whinge, BTW, more an observation of how a simple policy change (radius rather than borders?) could have such a positive impact on environment and health - I'm sure there are thousands of similar situations around the country.

2 years ago we published this study suggesting significant mitochondrial dysfunction in Long-Covid patients. The idea was so crazy that we weren't able to include "mitochondrial dysfunction" in the article title. Instead, we had to used "decreased fat oxidation and altered lactate production" as surrogates for mitochondrial function through the methodology that I developed. It as also such a wild idea that the journal didn't want to publish it as an article and instead it was just as a "correspondence" to the Editor. Link here 👇 atsjournals.org/doi/10.1164/rc… 2 years later, there are dozens of very well articulated and sophisticated studies showing mitochondrial dysfunction in long-covid patients. The evidence now is quite robust. While we don't have any medication to treat mitochondrial dysfunction, exercise is the only method we know that can work. With so much evidence, it is time for hospitals and healthcare systems to invest in supervised exercise programs for long-covid patients. In my previous post, I showed a pioneer exercise intervention study led by my colleagues @alberenguel and @ManoloGallango at the @HospitalUnivTO in Spain where they showed that 8 weeks of supervised exercise training improved multiple parameters in Long-Covid patients.

So it rolls around again …if you’re a doctor or will be graduating in ‘24 and play or have played to a reasonable level (ex-pro, academy, good level non-league, representative etc.) then check this out. Next world championships in Australia and gunning for a fourth star.

Loved head coaching in World Medical Football Championships again in Vienna last week. A ‘side gig’ away from the coaching day job and a privilege to support NHS workers who play in the non-league to represent GB. Alas, runners-up after our wins in the previous two championships.

Another competition done with @GBRMedFootball , very grateful for the opportunity as always. Not the outcome we wanted and disappointed to lose 1-0 in the final but a very enjoyable 9 days in Vienna with a great group. Now back to the daily grind.

95p cheaper (more with NHS discount) in @BootsUK than the hospital cafe @UHD_NHS. Luckily I can easily walk the 50m to Boots to save £1, many in our hospital who are not so mobile and those who would assume the hospital cafe would/should be cheaper are losing out. #profiteering

@NCCUCambridge @zoe_robertson1 @fi_pea @HelenSpencerJo1 And that's not even considering half life of chloroethane, co2 equivalence, carcinogenic properties and risk to aquatic life. I'd probably say that a reusable (will last upwards of 10 years if they don't get binned) plastic and metal stick may be better. Just my opinion.

@NCCUCambridge @zoe_robertson1 @fi_pea @HelenSpencerJo1 Well if you reverse your question and consider the ethyl chloride can is also made of plastic (the lid and the nozzle component) and metal (the can) plus the transport costs of multiple cans. I think you could probably say its probably environmentally better.
