NEW: It's now more lucrative to have a losing sports team than a championship team. We examined the Boston Red Sox to see how private equity and cost cutting invaded sports. In this era, teams want to sell good players for profit more than they want to have a good season.

MA edition! Overrated: Old Sandwich Underrated: Boston Golf Club Properly Rated: Kittansett

Lydia Ko found me on the range Tuesday at the Founders Cup and asked if we could reschedule our lunch interview for later that afternoon. The range was packed and players were waiting for a spot to hit. Then later, as her practice round dragged on, she asked if we could bump it to breakfast the next day – 7 a.m. It was there, over a plate of eggs, that we talked about retirement and how she plans to say goodbye (she doesn't want a retirement parade). We talked about how she's come to realize that she doesn't really love golf, not like many of her peers do, anyway. We talked about what drives her now. It was a 45-minute conversation, and I left feeling grateful. Ko was 16 the first time she told me that she planned to retire at age 30, two days after she made her first paycheck as a pro. She was always destined for greatness. But the woman she's become – the wisdom she carries – is what separates her now. golfweek.usatoday.com/story/sports/g…
