It’s not surprising that many women are choosing careers over motherhood. Why is that? Well, as with everything, it's a complex interplay of factors. I’ll start by saying the obvious: some women just don’t want to have kids and that’s fine! But for many, there are other reasons. One is the cost of raising children. Yes, it’s true that humans have been raising kids under far more challenging circumstances throughout history. But the financial demands associated with parenting have increased, especially in the age of social media. People today experience FOMO. They desire to travel, buy nice clothes, and have exciting experiences, which can conflict with the financial responsibilities of raising children. Beyond the financial aspect, motherhood is not always perceived as a prestigious pursuit. It’s not as glamorous as other endeavors. In reality, being a mom can be tough, frustrating, and often goes unnoticed in terms of the labor involved. Additionally, unreliable or unsupportive partners make it seem really unattractive. When women continually witness stories of men leaving their wives for younger partners, it reinforces the notion that focusing on building a family may not be worthwhile. Similarly, hearing about friends' partners being abusive or uninvolved in childcare can discourage women from embracing motherhood. The negative social judgment faced by stay-at-home moms, both from men and women, further diminishes the desire to pursue that path. While there are cases where women successfully balance amazing careers and motherhood, the reality is that most women find it difficult to juggle both. This constant struggle often leads to feelings of failure. Furthermore, the window of fertility for women coincides with the period when people typically prioritize their careers. Culturally, we are coming off of the "Girl Boss" era, where women were encouraged to derive their individual worth from professional achievements. The emphasis was on climbing the corporate ladder, becoming CEOs, and matching the professional aggression of men. Having become a mother myself, I now firmly believe that nothing can compare to the long-term satisfaction of experiencing the love and pride one feels for their child. The genuine smiles, the small accomplishments. I do think that as we approach the end of our lives, what truly matters are the memories we shared and the love we felt for others. And there is no love greater than that of a mother for her children. So, what can we do? (this will be focused on women’s perspectives) I always advise my younger female friends to consider freezing their eggs at an early stage of their careers. This decision allows them to focus on professional growth without the pressure of finding a partner or building a family immediately. I do wish there were more accessible resources for women who cannot afford this option, so if you know of any, please share them below! To all reading this: please respect other’s time. If the person you’re dating is serious about commitment and having children, but you are not, be honest and upfront about it. I have witnessed many friends wasting their valuable youth on those who led them on, only to end up single, without children, and bitter. Lastly, it would make a huge difference if people, especially men, shared more about how happy they are with their partners and family. Unfortunately, some of our current masculine role models make women want to remove their uteruses, instead of having kids. If we want to inspire women to pursue motherhood, it is crucial for our society to recognize and appreciate the immense contributions of mothers in raising the next generation. Building a better world is meaningless if there are no humans to benefit from it.
