@danielbarkeley @afneil If fossil fuels are still required why is Ed Miliband blocking any new drilling in the North Sea. There will always be a requirement for gas as long as we are an industrial nation but again Miliband seems intent on destroying that too.

@echintune @afneil No fossil fuels still have plenty of non-energy uses. There might be some residual gas usage in winter. Maybe jet fuel, if we can't synthesize a replacement. But it'll be at least a 90% reduction by 2050 ,and the rest will be mopped up shortly thereafter.

You are aware that oil and gas together still account for 73–75% of the UK's total primary energy consumption (which covers all energy needs across electricity, heating, transport, industry and other sectors, measured in primary energy terms)? So explain to me exactly how ‘you will make it happen’ that we don’t use fossil fuels.

£82 worth having especially for poorer families. I suspect it would be more. Much more if carbon taxes cut too. There are no savings from the shift to renewables. Contracts are still being doled out with guaranteed strike prices way above market prices and then index linked forever. We’ve spent billions subsidising renewables. The OBR forecasts we will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Then there’s the cost of maintaining gas back up (more billions) and of upgrading the grid to handle greater intermittency (more billions), a built-in feature of renewables.

@herd_member @afneil So once the infrastructure is in place the subsidies will magically disappear. Shame about the guaranteed strike price and inflation busting increases within the contracts.
