Like Cytus II, the story is pretty core to the rhythm section (i.e: you must finish the story to unlock most of the free songs). Unlike Cytus II, the cutscenes are completely skippable for those who aren't interested.

Thankfully, the story is still playable if you're not good at rhythm games, as the minimum completion needed is 25%. There are paid methods to increase progress, but these aren't necessary and it's still quick without them.
