@Martonelab @morgan_vis @HakaiInstitute I mean…some waters around Prince of Wales Island were as warm as areas in Puget Sound a few years ago (not this year, thankfully!). Wonder if it is winter temperature or summer temperature that drives distribution more.

Behold the new northern limit of Sea Palm, #Postelsia! This #kelp was long assumed to peter out at Hope Island, BC… but now found 50km north at Cranston Point, almost (but not) to Calvert Island & @HakaiInstitute.
Will ocean warming push it farther north? We are watching! 👀

@BeringFisherman I noticed large coho at the start of the season on POW and then they got smaller. I read about a time where runs from the prior were delayed into the next yr, resulting in a bumper yr…but then runs were wonky for a couple of yrs after. Hopefully not like that this year.

CODIUM! Also, holy cow, this "easy" side project reveals I'm a total Jon Snow when it comes to siphonous green seaweeds. Despite teaching #seaweed courses for years...

This week @graceemelchers & I collected spores from likely the last Bull Kelp bed off Gabriola Island, right at the edge of where #SalishSea kelp forests are vanishing due to warming waters from #climatecrisis. Part of our #kelp conservation+restoration research for @kelprescue

Ok, ok. This is going to take some time…there are barely any seaweed folks over on Bluesky. And no aquaculture people?

*moving in progress* Please come find me at Bluesky Social! My new handle is "drkelp" since it was actually available and not claimed by a Spongebob account. 😊 We're building a new science community over there.

I was quite honored to be included in this important conversation about black seaweed (Pyropia abbottiae), hosted by the Sealaska Heritage Institute. Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest are concerned for a critical resource: sealaskaheritage.org/node/1827

@rogue_bander the activity on bluesky is reminiscent of younger science twitter...just need to bet more people over there and 👩🍳💋

It seems like a big shift is happening right now with #ScienceTwitter. Where is everyone moving to? What do you recommend? I want to stay connected with folks in my field!!
Auburn, AL 🇺🇸 English

@TrevorABranch I want Bluesky but might have to settle for Threads until I can get in.

@ecophyte I have been on their wait list for eight months now - still no invite
