What You Say vs. What They Hear: Math Teacher Edition... or Addition? It can be tricky teaching math vocabulary when students are still learning the intricacies of the English language. Homophones and varying connotations can make this even harder! ◾ You say “sum”… they hear “a little, but not all.” ◾ What’s the “mean”? Someone who isn’t very nice. ◾ “Today we are learning the formula for volume.” They take their headphones out. Math can feel like a foreign language sometimes, but it’s a language we can all learn to speak fluently! #TeacherHumor #Funny #MathJokes #ITeachMath

Parent: “What did you learn at school today?” Child: “Nothing.” Have you ever had this conversation with your child? Did they really learn nothing at school all day? Of course not! How can you ask better questions to get a more detailed response while also boosting retention? Try one of these questions instead: ✅ What did you learn today that you didn’t already know? ✅ How does what you learned today connect to what you already knew? ✅ If one of your classmates was absent from school today, how would you explain ____? ✅ How might you explain ____ another way? ✅ Can you show me how ____? ✅ What might ____ look like in a drawing? Equation? ✅ What are you still wondering about ____? #ParentSupport #Retention #Question #Memory

According to A Pedagogy of Play by Harvard Project Zero, engaging students through playful, meaningful activity helps them connect ideas, welcome risk-taking, and develop metacognitive skills—all essential for lasting learning. Playing games as a way to learn can: ✔️ Increase fluency ✔️ Develop conceptual thinking and understanding ✔️ Increase motivation by having an objective (i.e., to win!) How do you incorporate learning through play in your classroom? #LearnThroughPlay #Harvard #MathGames #Education

At Emerald Education, we believe great design does more than just make things look better—it makes communication clearer, more engaging, and more impactful. And behind nearly every visual you see from us is the creative force of Sharron Stuart, our incredible graphic designer! Sharron plays a key role in just about everything we do. From product design and conference materials to social media graphics, flyers, presentations, and more—if it’s visual, she’s probably had a hand in it. Her eye for detail and thoughtful creativity help bring the Emerald Education brand to life across every platform and project. But Sharron’s talents don’t stop at the office. She’s also a devoted wife, mom, and friend, and shares her home (and probably some floor space) with Arlo, her very large and very lovable dog. We’re so thankful to have Sharron here as an integral part of the Emerald Education team! 💚 #EmployeeAppreciation #GraphicDesign #Family #Education

When you think of "summer slide," do you think about a red plastic slide on the playground? Did you know there's another kind of summer slide? It’s the learning loss that often happens over the summer. How can you help counteract summer slide? Play a math game! Games are a fun way to keep skills sharp while also building relationships and strategic thinking. Follow these tips! 🎉 Make it fun. Learning is connected to engagement, so games are the perfect way to lock in important math concepts. 🕒 Keep it short. Quick games maximize learning and keep children from losing interest. 🔂 Play it again. Different numerals and problems result from each new draw of the card or roll of the dice. Same game—unique experiences and outcomes each time! 💬 Talk it through. Explaining reasoning or strategy requires organizing thinking and communicating clearly. Did you know that Emerald Education’s Elevation Station Math Games package has 135 games to combat summer slide for Grades K–8? #SummerSlide #LearningLoss #BackToSchool #Education

How do you know if the students in your class are making progress? What assessment tools do you use to measure that progress? ✏️ Quizzes ✏️ Unit tests ✏️ Benchmarks ✏️ End-of-year tests ✏️ Checklists ✏️ Observations ✏️ Portfolios By definition, progress is forward movement toward a destination. To evaluate students’ progress accurately, you have to know both the starting point and the destination. One way to think about progress is as a comparison. ✏️ How far have students come from where they started? ✏️ How much farther do they need to go to reach the destination? That means students can be at two different places in their learning and yet still have demonstrated progress. Pretty cool, right? Let’s make sure to celebrate all students’ progress! #Assessment #Progress #School #Teachers

It’s all starting to make sense! Today is International Infinity Day ♾️ AND International Cat Day. 🐱 This can’t be a coincidence. The math teacher in us says that correlation doesn’t equal causation. But the pet lover wonders if maybe cats planned this somehow… We’ll have to monitor this further. Updates to come. #TeacherHumor #InternationalInfinityDay #InternationalCatDay #Cats #Math

Pattern blocks, integer chips, fraction strips, and more! Which manipulative do you reach for most often in the math classroom? Which is most effective at developing conceptual understanding? Are they the same manipulative? With so many all-star manipulatives in the classroom, which would win MVM, or “Most Valuable Manipulative”? If you were to announce the winning manipulative in a speech, what would you say? “The MVM Award for Most Valuable Manipulative goes to __________ because __________.” What’s your MVM? 🎖️ #Teachers #Math #Classroom

The path is shifting—are we paying attention? (Long post, but worth your consideration if you’re in education.) For decades, the dominant message in education was clear: college is the key to a high-paying, stable career. But that narrative is evolving. Today, more students—and families—are seeing the value in skilled trades. Electricians, welders, contractors, and plumbers are earning six-figure salaries just a few years out of high school—often without the burden of student debt. And unlike past generations, Gen Z isn’t carrying the same bias against these careers. So what does this mean for schools and teachers? It means we need to know our audience. Grades and college acceptance may no longer be the universal motivator. But purpose still is. Students will work hard—when they understand why it matters. If a student doesn’t see how today’s math lesson connects to their future, we can’t expect effort. But if they see that mastering math could be their first step toward owning their own business, building homes, fixing engines, or earning that dream car? Now we’ve got their attention. Let’s shift the conversation from “college readiness” to career relevance. Because the future our students want starts in our classrooms—if we’re willing to meet them where they are. As this Pew Research Center graph shows, back-to-school times vary widely by state. But for teachers, the first day of school isn’t just a day—it’s the culmination of years of preparation through degree programs, classroom experience, trainings, and professional learning. Many years of hard work lead up to this day when teachers finally get to share what they know and love with their students. Whatever your start date, we want to thank you, #teachers. You don’t just show up—you build futures. 👏🍎 Note: Graph based on a random sample of 1,573 public school districts. “No data” column represents the shares of students and school districts among all those sampled for which a school start date could not be determined. Figures are rounded to the nearest whole number. Source: Pew Research Center analysis of school calendar data. buff.ly/7pXYo6Z #BackToSchool #FirstDayOfSchool #EducationResearch #Data

When someone says “fluency,” what words come to mind? Do you think about speed or accuracy? This is not uncommon since many of us have memories of timed speed tests. “Procedural fluency” is a term that has been well-defined for decades by such organizations as the National Research Council and the National Council for the Teachers of Mathematics. Both organizations describe fluency as being able to apply procedures efficiently, flexibly, and accurately. While most of us understand accuracy as correctly solving a procedure, the other two components of procedural fluency may be less familiar. Let’s take a closer look at these. ◾Efficiency refers to solving a procedure in a reasonable amount of time by selecting an appropriate strategy and readily implementing that strategy. ◾Flexibility means knowing multiple procedures and applying or adapting strategies to solve procedural problems. Your turn to reflect! ◾Which of these three components currently takes center stage in your classroom? ◾Which receives the least amount of emphasis? ◾How are efficiency and flexibility related? #MathFluency #MathEd
