Am rereading Blood Meridian this weekend. Relentlessly violent is an understatement. It also feels strangely familiar. One of the things I discovered about myself—something that still surprises and occasionally concerns me—is that I can talk to murderers, warlords & genocidaires in a matter-of-fact and dispassionate way, without a hint of disapproval. I can write down and reason through what they do. Yet at the same time I lose my mind at the injustice if someone jumps a line. With the extremists, however, I can be horrified and clinical all at once. McCarthy is one of the few writers who can capture the gruesomeness, horribleness, injustice, and normalcy and indifference of violence all at once. The only other novel I can compare to is Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance (possibly my favorite novel). But the protagonists are not the war criminals. I’m not sure why or how McCarthy could write this novel, but I think it’s the closest anyone (including me) can come to comprehending the ordinary ease of violence and mass extermination.

As long as it is roughly the same amount of time and there's decent public transit / car to borrow when I arrive. I still have a non-data-supported fear of going super-fast in a train and crashing.

Mayor of Paris is leading the most ambitious effort worldwide to wean people off cars. She is redesigning transport, housing, jobs + public space so residents have the choice of living without long, polluting commutes. Cycling is now key to mobility. This is what leaders do.
