@HerringAli @fade_colors I’d argue that what worked in the past isn’t applicable now because readers’ tastes have changed. Readers don’t have the patience to allow things to unfold too slowly. Part of it is that as a society we’re used to info coming our way quickly. It affects how we see fiction too.

@fade_colors Honestly, part of the problem I see is people taking the "fast out of the gate" approach too far. Throwing us into a scene with no context doesn't work either. That's confusing. I want author to think about balance. But waiting to Ch 3 for the plot problem to arrive is bad too.

This is a simple fact of modern literature. I wish it wasn't this way, because so many great older books weren't written this way, and there's something to be said for a slow start, but this is where we are.

If you're querying & thinking, "I can't wait for the agent to get to chapter three" or maybe "page 7," then you have a 1st-pages problem. You have to engage from sentence one. You legitimately may only have a few paragraphs or to the end of page one to engage an agent's attention

@vickyweberbooks I mean I would caveat this in that sometimes I see other languages used inaccurately. Or as inauthentic depictions of bilingualism. It’s especially obvious when the other language has clearly been Google-translated. Representation is important but it needs to be good.

Can we PLEASE stop telling authors to cut other languages from their books? I’ve talked to multiple authors told to remove the Spanish. 😠 If readers can figure out what a hobbit is or casually drop “valar morghulis,” they can context clue their way through a real lang...

Estamos viendo -y no por primera vez con el asunto de Bad Bunny y el Súper Bowl- que para la gente MAGA el español no cabe en Estados Unidos. Apunta eso, estadista MAGA.

QueryTracker
QueryTracker@QueryTracker·
Announcing a Query-Free Christmas. On Friday, Dec. 20th, QueryManager will be temporarily shut down for a major overhaul and upgrade. It will likely take 4 to 5 days, so enjoy a query-free Christmas.  QueryTracker will still function fully. Only the QueryManager side will be unavailable, which means you won't be able to send queries or view query replies. But the agents won't be able to read queries either, so there won't be any replies to see.  If all goes well, everything will be back up and running by December 26th.
