Across Europe, climate-driven forest disturbances, such as wildfires and insect outbreaks, are expected to increase over the next century, according to a new large-scale modeling study in Science, substantially altering forested landscapes continent-wide. scim.ag/4ldjSxP

According to this paper, there could be c. 55.5 million tall trees (> 60 m height) across the Brazilian Amazon, with the highest density in the northeast portion. These trees have a disproportionate contribution to the carbon stored in these forests! nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/np…

Many of North America’s birds are in a state of accelerating decline, with over half of 122 species dying out faster, according to a new study. Their vanishing songs are a bellwether of a far deeper biodiversity crisis, researchers say. wapo.st/4kUFnTT

Here is the history of major changes in case its useful: 1. Built initial dashboard with ERA5 data visualizations 2. Added ENSO integration and ML projections 3. Implemented dark mode with theme toggle 4. Created projection history tracking (daily projection evolution) 5. Fixed projection model to use trailing 30-day anomaly as predictor 6. Set up GitHub repo and Render deployment 7. Fixed Python version for Render (needs full version like 3.11.11) 8. Diagnosed empty graphs issue (callback timeout from projection history) 9. Split single massive callback into chained sequential callbacks 10. Added loading spinners for better UX 11. Made dark mode default, fixed title centering and subtitle color 12. Added polar spiral plots (later replaced with ridgeline plot) 13. Replaced spiral plots with ridgeline plot (KDE distributions by year)

As a rare climate scientist working in Silicon Valley, I've been drinking from the AI firehose a lot more than my peers. I thought it would be helpful to lay out my experiences of both the promise and pitfalls of using AI to accelerate scientific research.

@hausfath This is a great thread, thanks for sharing. On this coding/visual part, I really like your dashboard. Do you have an example of the prompt/code used for this that could be shared? Thanks!

Finally, there are skills that I’ve never developed that AI makes easy. “Vibe coding” with tools like Claude Code lets me build and host websites in a day (e.g. the Climate Dashboard), two things I’ve never done before in my life: dashboard.theclimatebrink.com

Most medium-sized cities in the subtropics and tropics will warm faster than their surroundings under 2 °C of global warming, according to machine learning models. In 16% of cities, warming will be 50–112% higher than their environs. In PNAS: ow.ly/5I9N50YcWhE
