Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ told the story of a man who was walking along a road and became very thirsty. He found a well, went down into it, drank, and then came out. Suddenly, he saw a dog panting and eating the moist earth out of extreme thirst. The man said [to himself], “This dog is suffering from the same thirst that I suffered from.” So he went down the well again, filled his shoe with water, and held it in his mouth (while climbing up) until he reached the dog and gave it water to drink. Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave him his sins. The Companions asked: “O Messenger of Allah, shall we be rewarded for showing kindness to animals as well?” He ﷺ replied: “There is a reward for every living creature.” (Or in some narrations: “There is a reward for serving any living being.”)

Kindness to animals is an important teaching of Islam...

I experienced this with my Mum funnily some years back, and she was one who told me the reason. This is what she said: She told me that supermarkets are giant, cold boxes with huge ventilation systems that keep the air moving every second. Those bananas look perfect on the shelf because the store is sucking the air out and keeping them in a deep sleep. But the moment you bring them into a warm kitchen and put them in a still bowl, they wake up and start "breathing" on each other, which makes them turn dark before you even get a chance to use them for what you bought them for. Her reasons resonated with me and I hope scientists can also confirm if she is.

The Quran itself the most perfect speech in existence acknowledges this. Say: If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted. (Q 18:109). The words run out before the description is complete. They always will.

And He is closer to you than your own heartbeat. There are no words perfect for this. Every language ever spoken by every human being who has ever lived combined, in their most eloquent moments cannot produce a description of Allah that does justice to who He actually is.
