Dr. Louis Jolyon "Jolly" West (1924-1999) was a psychiatrist born in Brooklyn to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants. He earned his M.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1949 after Army service in WWII, then completed psychiatry residency at Cornell's Payne Whitney Clinic in 1952. He served in the USAF (1948-1956) as chief of neuropsychiatry at Lackland AFB, researching "brainwashing" techniques on Korean War POWs. This drew CIA attention; he became a contractor for MKUltra (subproject 43), conducting LSD, hypnosis, and mind-control experiments while chairing psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma (1954-1969, appointed full professor at age 29). From 1969-1989, he chaired UCLA's psychiatry department and directed the Neuropsychiatric Institute. He examined Jack Ruby and Patty Hearst, studied cults/violence, and opposed Scientology. He died of cancer in 1999.
