There is a video circulating on the internet that is difficult to watch. A woman sits on a pavement in Louisville, Kentucky. She is wearing a hospital gown. It is 36 degrees outside. Her belongings, everything she apparently owns, are in a plastic bag on the concrete beside her. Behind her, through the glass doors she has just been escorted through, the hospital hums along as normal. The security guards who brought her here have already gone back inside. She couldn’t afford her bill. This is not a scene from a developing nation or a history book. This is the United States of America. The country in which it happens has spent decades telling the rest of the world that it has the highest GDP on earth. Which is a bit like a restaurant proudly displaying its bill on the wall. Enormous number. Terrible meal. The lobster was frozen, the wine came from a box. Europe, by comparison, has spent the better part of a century building something rather different. The food, for a start, is extraordinary. Not in a showy way, but in the way that a simple lunch in Lyon or a glass of wine on a terrace in Lisbon reminds you that eating is one of the genuinely good things about being alive. The wine is the wine that the rest of the world has spent generations attempting to replicate, mostly without success. Roughly 35 percent of Europeans live with a chronic illness. In America, that number is 76 percent. The difference is not genetic. It is architectural. It is the slow accumulation of decent food, walkable cities, actual holidays, and a healthcare system that does not require you to crowdfund your own appendix. Europeans work fewer hours. They have more purchasing power on a smaller salary once you subtract the cost of health insurance, medical debt, and the private school their child needs because the local public one has a metal detector at the entrance. They live, on average, about ten years longer. Not ten years of decline and doctor visits, but ten years of being a person in the world. In the first quarter of 2025, the number of Americans leaving the United States doubled compared to the previous quarter. Europe was their top destination. Not for a sabbatical or a gap year. Permanently. These are not people who failed. These are people who did the maths. There is a man somewhere in America right now who has worked fifty-hour weeks for forty years, taken one week off when his employer permitted it, and will, statistically, be dead before he sees seventy. And there is another man, not very far away on a map but an entire civilisation removed in practice, sitting on a terrace in the afternoon sun with a glass of something cold and no particular place to be. He has had six weeks off every summer since 1987. He knows his neighbours by name. The first man’s country has the higher GDP. The first man’s country tops the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) index. The second man tops the Quality of Life Index (QLI). The better health. The longer life. The afternoon. MAGA America calls that losing. Ask anyone. Gandalv / @Microinteracti1

When women + children + elderly casualties (killed + wounded) account for ~half of total, you can be nearly certain that this attack was anything but "targeted"; this was terrorism. ▪︎ Total casualties: 1,453 - Women: 429 (30%) - Children: 172 (12%) - Elderly (65+): 56 (4%)
Nicolas Sawaya@sawaya_nicolas

Demographics of casualties on Black Wednesday (Apr 8 2026), as of Apr 9, per Lebanon MoPH (totals higher now): ▪︎ Killed: 303 - Women: 71 (23%) - Children: 30 (10%) - Elderly (65+): 9 (3%) ▪︎ Wounded: 1,150 - Women: 358 (31%) - Children: 142 (12%) - Elderly (65+): 47 (4%)

Repeating what I said a few days ago: Iran still has at least 30 patrol ships equipped with missiles and torpedoes, plus hundreds of other fast boats also equipped with missiles and some classes with torpedoes. Hundreds more boats have rocket launchers, many of which have already received guidance kits. It is said that Iran can operate up to 4,000 fast boats. I estimate at least 1,500, of which 300-350 are armed with missiles. Recapping: the already devastated Iranian navy still operates around 30 patrol ships, 300–350 missile boats, and about 18–22 submarines and mini-submarines.

In addition to these forces, Iran has been commissioning at least 1,000 high-tech UUVs since 2022. The vast majority are torpedo-loitering systems longer than 5 meters, but there are also XLUUV models and other variants. Combined with anti-ship systems, aerial drones, and surface drones, -some reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h-, these assets create a defensive belt along the Hormuz coast that is practically impossible for any navy to break through.

Israeli torture tactics used to torture Kurds in Jolani’s prisons. “including burning, electric shocks, and extreme torture practices such as what is known as “al-Khazouk” (a form of anal torture/rape), particularly in detention centers in the Tel Abyad/Girê Spî area.”
Syria Justice Archive@SyJusticeArc

Shocking testimonies from freed Kurdish prisoners about brutal torture operations in Al-Jolani’s prisons In a new report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), harrowing testimonies from prisoners released from the jihadist authority’s detention facilities were documented. The transitional government released the third batch of detainees, comprising 400 prisoners from jails in Manbij, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, Aleppo, Hama, Ras al-Ayn/Serêkaniyê, and Tel Abyad/Girê Spî. 🔹 Prisoners were subjected to torture methods prohibited under international law, including burning, electric shocks, and extreme torture practices such as what is known as “al-Khazouk” (a form of anal torture/rape), particularly in detention centers in the Tel Abyad/Girê Spî area. The nature, repetition, and geographic spread of these practices point to an institutional and systematic pattern of torture, not isolated individual acts. 🔹 Detainees reported systematic humiliation and discriminatory treatment, including persecution based on national and ethnic identity, particularly against Kurdish detainees, as well as religious (sectarian) discrimination against Alawite detainees, alongside degrading and dehumanizing practices. 🔹 These acts constitute a direct violation of the principles of non-discrimination and human dignity, fundamental, non-derogable principles under customary international law and relevant international conventions, including the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Deliberate starvation, malnutrition, denial of basic healthcare, and severe overcrowding in detention centers were documented, particularly in Aleppo’s prisons, where detainee numbers far exceeded facility capacity. 🔹 Testimonies from female fighters of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) described severe physical and psychological torture, including deliberate harm, psychological pressure, and humiliation. One survivor expressed the scale of suffering, saying: “Like knives carving into our bodies… we will never forget.” 🔹 Data reveals the continued practice of prolonged arbitrary detention. Among those released were individuals arrested in the Afrin region nearly eight years ago, without formal charges, without being brought before a competent judicial authority, and without access to any fair trial guarantees, a flagrant violation of the prohibition on arbitrary detention and the right to liberty and personal security. 🔹 The testimonies of released prisoners raise serious concerns about the fate of large numbers of detainees whose whereabouts remain unknown. One former prisoner reported that detention centers hold large numbers estimated in the thousands, raising genuine fears that they may be subjected to similar or even graver violations, potentially amounting to enforced disappearances. 🔹The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) demands the following: The immediate and full disclosure of the fate of all detainees and missing persons, and the publication of official lists of their names and places of detention. The immediate and unconditional cessation of all forms of torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment in all detention facilities. The alignment of detention conditions with binding international standards, and the guarantee of detainees’ fundamental rights, including the right to a fair trial in accordance with due process.

A state at war with its own people has failed. This Labour government is already in terminal decline. Clueless and nasty in equal measure. And they had such a big majority, such a massive opportunity to do good things.

Pathetic but predictable. You announce a new stance on weapons aid which offers nothing Bibi himself hadn't already said. You want Israel to continue buying and using our genocide weapons to kill Iranians, Lebanese and Palestinians. Just that they pay for them instead of us.
