@fryguy_pa @sheilaflwrseed @astoundconnects A storm blew a large branch across the fiber, NS freight train snagged it and pulled the fiber and poles down - ring flipped automatically to the other path - no worries. Until a squirrel decided to chew through it several hours later triggering alarms (and lots of calls).

#Customers in #Catasauqua, #NorthCatasauqua, #NorthamptonBoro, and #Whitehall:we’re awaiting access to repair damage to our fiber network caused by a pole fire. Our crews are onsite awaiting PPL’s approval to safely access the area to restore connectivity as quickly as possible.

@cjmoren01 @sheilaflwrseed @astoundconnects Oh trains and backhoes are the bane of any fiber run. People would be surprised how much fiber runs next to railroad tracks. Joys of right of ways.

@fryguy_pa @sheilaflwrseed @astoundconnects Geo. diverse paths are great - but as I learned many years ago are NOT 100% reliable as there can be failures on both sides of the ring at any time. A storm and a freight train took down one path, and a squirrel chewed thru the other, miles away, within hours of each other.

@cjmoren01 @sheilaflwrseed @astoundconnects True. But diversified paths would have prevented such a widespread outage. This fire and following outage indicates a critical single point of failure.

@sheilaflwrseed @astoundconnects It's clear you have no idea how long it takes to replace damaged fiber optic cable. Never mind that this is due to a pole fire. A lot has to happen before they get access to make repairs. Among them put out the fire and replace the pole.

@astoundconnects It’s an area wide outage for the Lehigh Valley, Northampton. It’s a known problem.
