Tony Cascarino was 31. His contract at Chelsea had expired, injuries were piling up, and the only clubs showing interest were Blackpool and Notts County. His career looked like it was fizzling out. Then, out of nowhere, his agent Dennis Roach called: “Tony, Marseille want you.” Cascarino told his Ireland teammate John Sheridan, who burst out laughing: “Marseille?! What, the Marseille that just won the European Cup? Fuck off!” So that’s exactly what Cascarino did - he packed his bags and went. What followed changed his life. The big striker lost weight, stopped drinking, learned French, embraced a new culture, and rediscovered his form and his joy for the game. ‘Tony Goal’, as he’s still known in France, smashed 61 goals in two seasons and became a Marseille favourite. He played in France until 37, enjoyed four standout years with Nancy, and - just like Michel Platini - was granted the freedom of the city. You just don’t get stories like this in football anymore.
