Ravensbrück - the largest German concentration camp for women Built in 1939, it imprisoned 130,000 women and children from over 30 countries. Tens of thousands were murdered through starvation, forced labour, executions, and medical experiments. Polish women were the largest group. Among the victims were the “Beinoperierte,” subjected to brutal pseudo-medical procedures that left many dead or permanently mutilated. Children faced extreme neglect; many died. Girls and women were also victims of forced sterilisation. On 27–28 April 1945, as the Third Reich collapsed, 20,000–25,000 prisoners were forced on death marches westward under SS guard. Already weakened by years of abuse, they were driven without adequate food, water, or medical care. Those who could not keep up were shot; many died from exhaustion, illness, or exposure. In the chaos, some prisoners managed to escape or were liberated by advancing Allied forces. On 30 April 1945, Soviet forces liberated the camp.
