Went on a date last night with a girl who studies quantitative finance, and she was really curious about the in depth side of what I do. She listened for a bit, then just goes: “Wait… so you make money when people lose?” I said, “Well, yeah but it’s more than that.” And she hits me with: "Do you not feel bad for the people on the other side of that? Like… you’re basically building something where the more they lose, the more you win. I don’t know, that feels kind of messed up when you say it out loud.” That stuck with me. Not because I agreed with it but because of how quickly she got there. No bias, no industry framing, no buzzwords. Just a raw, outside in perspective. To me, it’s always been numbers on a dashboard. Conversion rates. Deposits. VIP tiers. Lifetime value. To her, it was simple: People come in, lose money, and someone on the other side profits from it. And the more I tried to explain it, the more I realized something uncomfortable Most of my explanations were just refinements, not contradictions. That made me step back a bit. Because every industry builds its own language to make things feel more acceptable: “Users” instead of people “Losses” instead of someone’s rent money “Retention” instead of keeping someone playing longer than they should You get used to it. You stop questioning it. And you start thinking in systems instead of outcomes. Again I’m not saying the industry is evil or that she’s completely right. There’s entertainment value and there’s responsibility on both sides, and there are plenty of legitimate operators. But it did make me realize something important: If someone completely removed from your world hears what you do and their immediate reaction is discomfort, that gap between perception and reality is worth paying attention to. Not necessarily to change everything overnight but at least to be aware of it. Because it’s very easy to normalize something when you’re deep in it. Harder to see it clearly when you’re not.
