Even when you pay for the art you’re not going to personally message the author and tell them to go kill themselves because you hated their book.
People don’t want to admit they dont understand fanfiction and the simple act of moving to the next work when you don’t like the summary or the tags on a fic. The fandom is blowing up over something that could’ve been avoided by the rule of “don’t like, don’t read”.

Criticism should not be personal attack against the writer. Also, fics are written for free and you don't have to read them. Keep your criticism for art you actually pay for.

The new influx of people in fandom spaces not understanding the decorum of “don’t like, don’t read” is what’s poisoning fandom/fanfiction in general.
These people who post on AO3 are writing as a HOBBY, and people go and put them on blast because they found something they didn’t like in their work.
This person was literally sent death threats because they tagged things PROPERLY and nobody knows how to filter tags so they don’t see works they won’t like. They expect everything to be catered to their wants.
And this is the reason why many writers leave AO3 and move to other platforms. It’s not worth being harassed by people.

Fandom used to be fun, now we’re just doxxing people out of nowhere. Sending death threats to authors. Like if yall don’t like what you’re seeing or reading, just keep on scrolling and mute or block that person or that specific words. Not everything or everyone has to be miserable

Very old school approach and that’s exactly how I used to do it when I was first getting into the site.
The new influx of people coming into fandoms expect everything to be exactly what they want all the time and don’t know the decorum of just moving on if you don’t like a tag.
This is why I left AO3 as a writer. It’s not worth the trouble of explaining how the site works.

From an outside perspective (I love the Pitt but don’t contribute to the fanfiction space) it seems like two different situations are happening.
1. Someone on Twitter got doxxed
2. A person called out a Langdon/Santos fic for being in the Garsantos tag on AO3 and started a storm of hate towards the author (they claim it wasn’t intentional) and the author ended up taking their fic down because they got death threats (and a bunch of other heinous comments cause people can’t just shut up). But the drama is still spiralling on here because people don’t know how to filter tags on AO3 and get pissy when they find something they don’t like.
Both are heavily concerning situations.

They think they’re not complicit in the hate train that literally trampled over this poor author because they have a right to criticize a fic they didn’t read.
While I agree you’re allowed to have your opinions on works, to stir the pot and create a massive narrative on something you didn’t even bother to read cause you KNEW you wouldn’t like it is completely unjustified and a load of shit. Fanfiction changes characters all the time, nothing is set in stone, and to take it this far is just absurd.

Ahh….to go back to the early days of AO3 where it wasn’t a toxic shit storm and people didn’t have this holier than thou attitude about fictional characters….gimmie a Time Machine so I can relive that joy.

why are people getting mad about a bad taste fanfiction and sending death wishes over it.... in the early 2010s you had to scroll through unimaginable fics to find the ones you liked. You CAN scroll down because what a fan produces does not, in fact, threaten canon.

It’s because the new generation of fic readers don’t understand how AO3 works or how to filter tags to their liking. To them if, they don’t like it they can’t control themselves and not say anything/move on, they need to make it known that they hate the idea or it’s not customized to what THEY want. People want to be the fanfiction police but they don’t know even a sliver of etiquette. Fanfiction is FICTION, the people are CHARACTERS, writer can change things around if they want, if you, as a reader, don’t like it MOVE ON AND SCROLL! It’s very simple.
God forbid people write what they want to without being harassed off the site and threatened to the point where they have to delete their work.

I think people are beginning to forget what the hell fanfiction is. ITS FICTION. You can write characters however you want, put them in alternative universes, make them aliens, WHATEVER YOU WANT. AO3 is an archive and people who are joining the fandom spaces need to realize how the hell it works. FILTER TO YOUR WANTS SO YOU DONT SEE STUFF THATLL BOTHER YOU.
